Terry James Hastings

The world lost a legend on March 29, 2026, when Terry James Hastings, 79, passed away at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after a long illness. Born and raised in Arlington, VT, Terry graduated from Arlington Memorial High School in 1966 and later moved to White Creek, NY, where he was the long-time owner and operator of White Creek Auto Sales (home of no guarantee whatsoever). A self-made man, Terry was always hustling and knew how to make a buck, relying heavily on his trademark wit and charisma to sell just about anything to anyone. Terry enjoyed classic cars, classic country music, and Class A fireworks (yeah, the good stuff). But his favorite thing in the world was spending time with friends and family, especially his thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Terry was predeceased by his father, Francis Wilkinson, his mother, Catherine Hover, and a brother, Vic Hastings. He is survived by his brother, Tony Hover (Roxanne) of Arlington, VT, and five children: Rick Hastings (Katrina) of White Creek, NY; Terry Hastings II (Kate) of East Greenbush, NY; Chad Hastings (Katie) of White Creek, NY; Kathy Hastings (LeRoy) of Westel, TN; and Holly Gillette (Brandon) of Fairport, NY. He also had a large circle of friends and extended family in Tennessee, including two sisters, Pearl King (J.D.) and Carol Johnson (Ray); a brother, James Skillinger (Keana); and "Uncle" Wayne Johnson. And in a true testament to his charm, he maintained good relationships with his ex-wives Karen and Bonnie as well.

Terry was extremely kind and generous, always going out of his way to help the less fortunate, even if it meant going without himself. To honor Terry's legacy, in lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you engage in a random act of kindness this week. The world is a tough place right now, so please consider doing what you can to brighten someone's day, just as Terry did for everyone around him. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
