Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vigen Memorial Home - Montrose on Oct. 1, 2025.
With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Terry Allen Phillips, 74, of
Montrose, Iowa. Born on October 8, 1950, in Macomb, Illinois, to R. Barney and Geneva Phillips, who preceded him in death, Terry passed peacefully surrounded by family on April 28, 2025.
Terry spent much of his life in the construction industry. As Construction Superintendent at S&G Construction, he oversaw the building of dozens of Casey's stores across the Midwest. One of his proudest projects was supervising the construction of the flood wall along the Mississippi River in Burlington, Iowa.
For 20 years, Terry managed the Smokin' Gun Hunting Club in Hamilton, Illinois, where he formed lasting friendships with others who shared his love of hunting, trap shooting, and great hunting dogs. He took great pride in breeding and training several National Championship hunting dogs. He was also a licensed auctioneer, a skill he shared with his father Barney. In retirement, Terry generously donated his auctioneering talents to fundraisers such as Pheasants Forever.
Terry is survived by his loving wife, Karen Phillips, and his children: Brad (Peggy) Phillips, Adam (Amelia) Bugos, and Michelle (Scott) Steer. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Dylan and Makayla Phillips and Hazel and Maizy Bugos-the lights of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Pruitt; niece, Misty Brewer; great-niece and nephew, Madison and Christian Brewer; and great-great nephew, Coe Blythe. Terry was a cherished father figure to the Grafton kids, Bryan and Kara, who also deeply mourn his loss.
Family meant everything to Terry. He was never happier than when the dining room table was crowded with loved ones and filled with food for a holiday feast. He was truly the glue that held the family together.
Terry had a magnanimous spirit and a soft spot for those in need. Always ready to lend a hand, he drew people in with his radiant smile, quick wit, and magnetic charm. His friendships ran deep, and his loyalty was unwavering.
He was an avid pool player and competed in numerous 9-ball tournaments. He also loved fishing and, in his younger days, was an accomplished horseman. Terry was a member of the Southside Boat Club, Tri State Gun Club, Fort Madison Eagles Club, Delta Waterfowl and Pheasants Forever.
Terry had a gift for mentorship, often guiding young people who needed direction-or delivering a life lesson they didn't realize they were getting at the time. The many heartfelt tributes received since his passing speak volumes about the impact he had. His loss leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of many-both young and old.
Rest in peace, Terry. Mission accomplished.
