Thad was born on February 7th, 1930 and passed away on
April 20th, 2025 at the age of 95Thad M. Torgersen, age 95, passed away Easter morning, April 20, 2025 at his home in
Cedar City, Utah. He was born February 7, 1930 in Koosharem, Utah to Elmer Levi and Leona (Winget) Torgersen. He grew up in Koosharem where he went to school through the eighth grade and then attended and graduated from North Sevier High School. He married his sweetheart Cleola Hatch on November 7, 1952 in the Manti LDS temple.
Thad was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Western Canadian Mission from 1950 to 1952. He has a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and was unwavering in his devotion through his example. He served faithfully in many callings in the auxiliaries of the church including: Scout Master, Bishopric, Group Leader and High Councilman. He served on the Town Board in Aurora, Utah. Thad served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He was the Chaplains assistant and also served as the LDS Group Leader for those stationed in and around Frankfurt. Cleola was able to join him for 9-months during his time in Germany where they made life-long friends and explored Europe together making memories to last a life-time.
Dad had an amazing Garden and produced enough vegetables to feed his family throughout the year and share with others. He was a prolific journal keeper. Earlier in life he was a sheep herder (age 14) where he was entrusted with Elmer's entire herd. He loved agriculture and was a farmer/rancher, a cheese maker and later in his career worked for the Utah State Department of Agriculture as a Compliance Officer.
He is survived by his children Gloria (Richard) Bratton, Dianne (Rick) Hadlock, Stanley (Janet Matheson) Torgersen, Shari (Kelly) Oppenheimer, Connie (Randall) Murray and Merilee (Mark) Robinson, sister Lois (Delbert) Christensen, sister-in-law Velma Torgersen, sixteen grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cleola, his parents Elmer and Leona and siblings Kyle, Milen, Louise, Neldo (Nick) and Alden.
The family would like to express special thanks to Maree Prince and the professional staff at Iron County Home Health who attended to both Mom and Dad in their moments of need. The family would also like to acknowledge special friends and neighbors whom Thad has known in the 53 years he lived in Cedar City.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 26th at the LDS Chapel, 400 North 500 W, Cedar City Utah at 11am. Viewings will be held on Friday, April 25th from 6pm to 8pm at Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 North 300 West,
Cedar City, Utah and prior to services at the aforementioned LDS chapel on Saturday from 10 to 10:45am. Interment in the Koosharem Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary, Saturday at 3pm. Online condolences and the live stream of the services will be available at www.mortuary.org.
