Obituary published on Legacy.com by Marshall Funeral Home and Cremations on Mar. 4, 2026.
Thaddeus Fields Ellis was born into the adoring family of his parents, Green and Virginia Ellis on Thursday, March 14, 1940, where he was educated and raised to honor the Lord.
Thaddeus was a proud member of his community and was alumni of Elizabeth H. Keys High School, where he built lasting friendships and memories that stayed with him throughout his life. Most knew him simply as "Thad."
In his early years, he worked at Fallo's Cleaners located in downtown
Ocean Springs, MS. He later began a long and dedicated career at Ingalls Shipyard in
Pascagoula, MS, working for more than twenty years before earning retirement. Following retirement, he delivered newspapers, allowing him to spend countless hours working alongside his youngest son, Travis, while creating treasured memories and dedicated conversations through their shared time together.
Thad, in his younger years, enjoyed coaching little league football, the "Chiefs," and umpiring girls' softball.
Never one to be idle, Thad volunteered at "The Lord Is My Help," where he lovingly prepared food for the community, washed dishes and humbly took care of any other charitable duties required of him. His compassion and kindness earned him gracious recognition as "Volunteer of the Year."
A gentle soul with sincere love for God's creations, including animals, Thad was known for raising German Shepherds and feeding cats around his house. In his leisure time, he found peace in fishing, riding his bike, and spending time outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was talking on his CB radio, where he was known by the handle, "OJ."
He had a passion for cars and enjoyed working outdoors on various projects. Thad was a lifelong devoted fan of country western music and treasured watching old western movies. He was a cowboy at heart! Thaddeus Ellis passed away Saturday, February 21, 2026 in
Biloxi, MS at the age of 85.
Thad was preceded in passing by his beautiful parents, Green and Virginia Ellis; three brothers, Willie Fred Ellis, Charles Ellis and Green Ellis, Jr.; three sisters, Juanita Smith, Fredonia Broughton and Annie Mae Watkins.
Our Father loved his family greatly. Sweet, cherished memories are left with his four children: John Gary Curry, Youlanda (Stephen) Upkins, Sharnette (Gregory) Moss and Travis Williams-Ellis; six grandchildren: Jonathan Curry, Christian (Cameron) Upkins-Everson, Manning Maurice McCutchen, Stephen Kennedy Upkins, William Ellis Upkins and Tyler Jean Williams-Ellis. He also helped raise Carsie "CJ" Durr, who was like a son to him.
Our beloved leaves precious memories with an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Joyce Stallworth is one niece who checked on her uncle often; her dedication is appreciated. Likewise, Cynthia Durr was a devoted, longtime friend and extended family member who was always only a call away, caring for and supporting our father unconditionally until the end. Tina Casey also remained steadfast in her devotion to the family. During Thad's final days, she ensured that he received quality hospital and hospice care by sitting with him, while offering encouragement and strength when it was needed most.
Rest in Peace, Dearest One.
