We are celebrating the life and legacy of Theodore McCurtis. He was born on September 19, 1934, in
Edwards, Mississippi to Herman and Mae Bell Lloyd McCurtis. He was the fourth of eight children. Six siblings preceded him in death. Theodore was raised in the community of Edwards. He attended Edwards Elementary School and Southern Christian Institute (SCI). In 1952 he joined the United States Air Force, as an air policeman and patrol man (MP).
Theodore served his country well. Theodore completed his duties and later moved to California with his first-born daughter Sharon D. McCurtis-Williams. Theodore later married Christine E. Watkins and to that union 3 children were born Andrea D. McCurtis-Townsend (William), Theodore McCurtis Jr., and Martin L. McCurtis(LaToya).
Theodore moved back to
Edwards, Mississippi. Theodore went back to Friendship M. B. Church where he was baptized as a child. Theodore also became a trustee at his church. He was very active at his church. Theodore went back to school at Utica Jr. College to get his high school diploma. He enjoyed helping disabled veterans. Theodore supported Head Start and the Boy Scouts in Edwards, MS. Theodore enjoyed fishing and hunting. Theodore also loved being around his family and friends.
Theodore leaves his legacy of his cherished and beloved wife, Christine E. McCurtis; four children: Sharon McCurtis Williams (
Jackson, MS) and Andrea D. Townsend (William) (San Antonio, Texas); sons: Theodore McCurtis Jr. (Madison, MS) and Martin L. McCurtis (LaToya) (
Jackson, MS); one great aunt, Marie Allen; one sister, Shirley J. Harris; sister-in-law, Corrine McCurtis; grandchildren: Erick Stanley, Corey Stanley-McCurtis, Theodore L. Smith, Shamar Townsend, Shane Townsend, Amber Townsend, Cierra Townsend, Justin Townsend, Martin McCurtis Jr; one grandchild preceded him in death Carlton L. McCurtis; 11 great grandchildren: DajishaMcCurtis, Erick L. McCurtis, De'rah Stanley, Teyanna Smith. Justice Stanley, Zion Wilson, Zoey Wilson, Jules Howard Jr., Brenda Howard-Pippin, Donald Howard, Terry Lynn; and numerous cousins and friends.
He was preceded him in death by four brothers: Alphonso McCurtis, Henry Earl McCurtis, Llyod McCurtis (Ethel Mae), Herman McCurtis Jr. (Lucy Haven), Willie McCurtis; one sister: Mary Beatrice McCurtis Howard (Jules); and one brother-in-law, Fred L. Harris.
Visitation Hours will be held from 1-7 p.m. Friday June 9th, 2023 at Peoples Funeral Home
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 10th, 2023 at Friendship Baptist Church located on 204 Williamson Ave. Edwards, MS 39066 and proceed to Green Hill Cemetery located on 5099-5143 Chichester Road Edwards, MS 39066
