Theresa Garey Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 9, 2025.
Theresa Ann Garey passed away peacefully on October 6th 2025 after a long illness. She was always artistic, even at an early age when she would make up stories to tell her siblings. Her father was an officer in the USAF so the family moved every few years. Terry lived in Germany, Portland Oregon, and went to high school in England. She came back to California where her parents were from, and lived with her grandmother while she attended Contra Costa College. She was always an avid reader of Science Fiction and she became involved in Science Fiction Fandom in the SF bay area. Around that time she worked in a map store and at the Magic Cellar in San Francisco. Terry was inspired by many local San Francisco area science fiction writers and fans. She began attending SF conventions where she met Denny Lien. They fell in love and she moved to Minnesota, where she further developed her writing skills while working as a librarian at the University of Minnesota. She authored a book on home wine making, which is still in print, but her main effort was science fiction poetry. Her poems were published in many books and anthologies. She founded the "Lady Poetesses from Hell", a group that pushed the boundaries of poetry. She received the Rhylsling Award in 1997 in the long poem category for "Spotting UFOs while Canning Tomatoes". She is survived by her sister Meg and brother Jim, and several nieces and grand nieces including Bethe, Emily and Rose.
