Theresa Wilkerson Kontos (75) passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025 in Tallahassee, Florida. She was born on August 31, 1949 in Orlando, Florida to parents Rudolph "Rudy" Wilkerson and Aletha Doke Wilkerson and her 9 older siblings. Theresa attended Leon High School prior to attending Florida State University. She would later graduate with her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and begin her career as a licensed therapist, remaining steadfast in her work until just days prior to her passing. Theresa received great respect from the community for her ground-breaking work with individuals and families faced with family systems crises. Her passion for mental health awareness and treatment touched every aspect of her life.
Theresa married her husband, The Reverend George D. Kontos, in Savannah, Georgia on August 15, 1970 and would eventually call various places and parishes across Georgia, Florida and Louisiana their home throughout his nearly 50 years of ministry prior to his passing in 2014. At that time she moved from Baton Rouge back to Tallahassee to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Theresa's faith was her anchor. When she wasn't raising her family or serving others through her work and ministries, she was passionate about cooking, fishing, any beach and everything family.
She embraced the Kontos greek heritage as her own. Survivors include her beloved children, Elizabeth Hightower (Hilton), Anastasia "Tassie" Sheridan (Mike) and Jimmy Kontos (Ashley); grandchildren Sophia, Ava and Lily Hightower and George and William Kontos, and Amelia Sheridan. She is also survived by her siblings, Bob and Tom Wilkerson and Margaret Androff along with a host of extended family members whom she loved dearly. Theresa also leaves behind many friends, colleagues and clients whom she impacted greatly throughout her career.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church of Tallahassee on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 10:00am. A reception will be held in the parish hall at Holy Comforter following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Trevor Project at give.thetrevorproject.org.
The Trevor Project: This nonprofit is "the world's largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) young people," according to its website. Margaret and Family, I was very sad to hear about Theresa. As it happens, we lost contact after our time at Leon but I still have good memories of knowing her there and also as her escort to our Prom... My Senior year and her Junior year. Sincere prayers to you all.
