Theresa McCarthy Obituary

Published by Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Funeral Home on Jun. 15, 2019.
It is with heavy hearts and yet great relief that we announce the passing of Theresa M. McCarthy on June 15, at 84 years young. Born on May 31, 1935 in Plymouth Meeting, Theresa was the daughter of Harry and Mary Alice Hoy (nee Leforte) and sister to Francis, Mary Alice, Regina, Joseph, Catherine, Agnes, Lawrence, Edward, Rose, and Robert. Upon graduating St. Mathew's High School, Theresa went on to work at the Reading Rail Road where she met her future husband, the late Thomas J. McCarthy Jr. She was the devoted mother to Patricia Beach (Kevin), Brian McCarthy (Maryann) and Maureen McCarthy, cherished grandmother of Kevin Jr., Caitlin and Lauren. Additionally, Theresa was lucky enough to be "adopted" by her neighbors, the Helm family. Anchored by Richard & Mary, their children Steven, Richie, Marykay, Maureen, Danny Boy, & Jimmy all embraced "Lala" as their own. Theresa was an avid sports fan. Among her favorites were the Eagles, Phillies, Villanova basketball and The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. She traveled extensively with groups that included both friends and family. Her hobbies included weekly card games, the theater, casinos and time spent at the shore. She was extremely outgoing with a feisty personality that allowed her to make many new friends after a brief encounter. In short, wether your were a new friend or old, sister or aunt, mother or grandmother, she was certainly a character, and one that will be dearly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to Theresa's Life Celebration on Friday June 21, 2019 from 9:30 am to 11 am followed by a Memorial Service at Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Life Celebration Home of East Norriton, 200 West Germantown Pike. I'm finally getting around to writing something for my Mom on this page where others have written beautiful sentiments and tributes. I am not at all surprised.
Mom, this still doesn't seem real and it happened way too fast. From the day of diagnosis to your last day on earth, you were a champ and an inspiration to me. You have to know that this is not the first time you inspired me. When I was growing up I saw a Mom who was loving, strong, selfless and fair. All of those attributes made me proud to call you Mom. Even when we had an occasional disagreement you listened and thought about it, but you ultimately told me that you had the last word. Well, now it's my turn..."Thank You"

Aunt Theresa was one of a kind. I will never forget our annual New Years parties at her house with Uncle Tom. We had so many great times there with family, friends, and unbelievable food. She was so feisty it was comical and still, always so caring. A great woman who truly lived life to the fullest. We will miss you dearly.

Aunt Theresa was a truly special woman. My siblings and I have so many special early memories of her, especially of her hosting her annual highly anticipated New Year's Day parties, surrounded by beloved cousins and family. Her home was always warm, caring and welcoming, as was she. Later in life we loved to sit and snack by the pool with her in the summer. She loved to laugh, sit and chat. Aunt Theresa possessed the wonderful (and rare) trait of being a truly good listener. She always asked what was going on with you and your family, not because she was being polite, but because she honestly cared and wanted to know- and when you were speaking she would nod, make an acknowledging sound and make you feel like the only person in the room (or by the pool). I am so grateful my own daughters got to know her and especially witness her love and appreciation for the value of family. Family meant everything to Aunt Theresa. We are all better for having known her. Mostly, I am so appreciative of the love and friendship she showed my Mom. No matter what your relationship to Theresa, she treated you like a friend first and foremost, even if you were a little kid at the time. She was just so fun and cool. We are deeply sorry for her loss and know it will be felt for many years, but hope the memories that will be there forever provide some comfort to her children at this very sad time.

Our deepest condolences to the McCarthy and Hoy family with the loss of a one in a kind woman.. She was a neighbor first with offering up some tomatoes then a friend and was Mom and LA until the day she left us. The pain will last a while but the memories of LALA will never be forgotten.
