Thomas K. Backman

Thomas K. Backman, 77, of Sandwich, formerly of Sudbury, passed away on January 31, 2026.

Tom was the loving husband of 47 years to Cheryl (Bezanson) Backman of Sandwich. He is also survived by his children, Keith Backman and his wife Kara of Sudbury, and Kristin and her husband Ryan Rooney of Southborough; his grandchildren, Kelsey and Taylor Rooney; his sister, Jill Keith and her husband Charlie of Florida and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tom spent his early years in Weymouth, where his lifelong love of the water began. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics before joining the Army National Guard. Tom went on to have a distinguished career with the MITRE Corporation, where he led a large team of consultants in the technology sector until his retirement in 2013.

Tom shared a beautiful life with his wife, Cheri. He was a devoted and supportive father to Keith and Kristin, deeply involved in their lives and accomplishments. Tom was a wonderful grandfather, and his role of Papa was one he cherished. He adored his granddaughters, filling their days with silliness, joy, and unconditional love.

Tom loved spending time with friends. He had a gift for bringing people together and was known for hosting a great party. He could often be found riding his bike, sailing, golfing, shooting hoops, or playing tennis. He cherished life on Cape Cod, enjoyed many visits to Martha's Vineyard, and treasured every moment spent with his family. His warmth, generosity, and enthusiasm for life touched everyone who knew him.

Honoring Tom's wishes, there will be no formal funeral services.The Backman family will plan a celebration of his life in the spring.
