Timothy Donn Backman was born in Sisseton, SD on June 10th, 1960, to Carl Leon and Gladys Eileen (Cleveland) Backman. Tim was the middle child of seven children. Tim attended school in Sisseton, SD, then Job Corp in Rapid City, SD. He joined the Army National Guard, where he served for almost seven years.

Tim held many different jobs throughout his life. He often talked about working with his uncle Gary on the farm and building apartments with him in Huron, SD. He worked on the interstate as it was being built, did custom combining and worked at the elevator in Sisseton. He also worked several jobs with Bituminous Paving as the chipper operator. His last job was with 21st Century Mfg. in Lake Preston where he worked for over twenty-four years and retired from.

Tim and Rene'e Lori (Nelson) settled in Lake Preston area in 1988 and were married on February 24, 1990. Tim and Rene'e had two boys to go along with his other four children. Tim and Rene'e enjoyed doing many things together; they camped, fished, and hunted with their kids. They built a fire pit area together for Rene'es' birthday to which she enjoys very much to this day. Tim and Rene'e were married for almost 36 years.

Tim's passions were music, old cars, and hunting. In his younger days he would listen to music for hours, listening to songs over and over while writing down the lyrics in the notebooks. Tim and Kayleen would do music trivia on Facebook almost every day; asking questions about bands, singers and songs. Tim and Rene'e attended many concerts together. He would talk often about his '68 and '69 Chevele's and how he ended up crashing them. He also enjoyed working on older cars. Tim was especially excited when he learned Rene'e also hunted and that she and her dad hunted out West in Harding County every year. He loved that he could show his children the area when they were old enough to hunt and shared his knowledge of hunting, shooting and fishing with them. Tim was a member of the Prairie Lakes Pheasant Club for several years and enjoyed helping with the yearly banquet and releasing pheasants around Lake Preston.
