Thomas George Barko, 82, of Westlake, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025. He grew up the youngest son of John Barko II, a steel worker at LTV Steel Company, and Anna Barko (née Mausser) .He attended Saint Boniface Catholic Elementary School, Saint Edward High School, and John Carroll University. Later, Tom went on to meet his wife, Mary Ann (née Vatral) who was introduced to him by a family priest. After a brief engagement, they soon wed and were married for 53 years.
Tom was a Cleveland public school teacher for 30 years, ending his career as a third grade teacher at Waverly Elementary School. He believed in the importance of a good education, and made sacrifices to ensure that his children would receive one. Tom adored his grandchildren. It was always an adventure with Grandpa, whether it was trips to the zoo, competitive games of chess or checkers, or pop parties in the basement. Enjoyment from a can of coke, a Burger King burger, a bag of Lay's potato chips or a trip to Marc's would always put a smile on his face. He was an avid golfer like his father, and passed on the love of the sport to his family.
The ultimate Frank Sinatra fan, he did it "His Way". Being a Sagittarius, he was very direct and would often say "I tell the truth, but people don't always like it." He wasn't interested in pretense, instead he was content living as an "average Joe." His faith was deeply rooted in Catholicism and his relationship with Jesus carried him throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, his three devoted children - Maryanne Barko of Westlake, OH, Thomas W. Barko (Diana) of Medina, OH, and Rebecca Barko (Jeff) of Hamden, CT - and his three beloved grandchildren - Kent, Mitchell and Eloise. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by both of his parents and by his brothers John Barko III and James Barko.
Tom Barko would want you to remember this cautionary tale - "Don't jump inside the house." Thanks Dad.
The family will receive friends on Saturday November 22, 2025 from 9:00 am until time of Mass at 10:00 am at St. Ladislas Catholic Church, 2345 Bassett Rd. Westlake followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
