Thomas Bell Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 3, 2026.
Thomas Mack Bell, age 84, of Walnut, Mississippi, passed away on January 31, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Connie Collier Bell, and his parents, Willie Alva Bell and Vashti Maxine Tatum Bell.

He is survived by his two children, Douglas Bell and Courtney Wilbanks (Chuck) of Walnut, Mississippi; his brother, William Bell (Mickey) of Walnut, Mississippi; his cherished grandchildren, Taylor Bell Savage (Brad) of Walnut, Mississippi, Peyton McPhillips (Tim) of Washington DC, Catherine Wilbanks, Caroline Wilbanks (Andrew), and Jacob Wilbanks all of Walnut, Mississippi; and his adored great-grandchildren, Hudson Savage and Mallie Tate Savage, of Walnut, Mississippi.

Dr. Bell held a doctorate in economics and agriculture and devoted his distinguished career to the global cotton industry. He worked for many years with the International Cotton Advisory Committee, a position that allowed him to travel extensively throughout the world, building relationships and sharing his expertise across continents. He was also the author of a book for the World of Cotton, contributing lasting knowledge to a field he cared deeply about.

An accomplished educator, Dr. Bell taught at Mississippi State University, Texas Tech University, and Shenandoah University, shaping and mentoring countless students throughout his career. His intellect, discipline, and passion for learning left a lasting impression on all who sat in his classroom.

Through every season of life - and especially in his later years - he found his greatest joy in time spent with his family and his loyal dog, Misty. He had a well-known sweet tooth, particularly for homemade pineapple cakes and fresh-baked cookies. He faithfully kept up with daily television, rarely missing the Weather Channel, and remained a devoted follower of Mississippi State sports.

Dr. Bell will be remembered for his brilliant mind, global perspective, dedication to education, deep love for family, and the quiet routines that brought him comfort and joy.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 PM until the time of service on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Ebenezer Church in Walnut. Memorial services will begin at 2 PM, officiated by Bro. Doc Shelton, with military honors rendered in recognition of his service.
