Trois Payne Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sanders Funeral Home - Lubbock on Feb. 7, 2026.
Trois Inez Payne, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Lubbock, Texas, on February 5, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on December 27, 1932, in Floydada, Texas, she grew up in Muncy, Texas, where her early experiences on the family farm instilled in her a lifelong work ethic. As a young girl, she learned to sell farm-fresh eggs and butter and was taught the joys of baking by her beloved aunt.

Trois attended school in Floydada, where she graduated from high school with a foundation that would support her future endeavors. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Texas Tech University, nurturing her passion for music and laying the groundwork for a life rich in artistic expression.

On December 17, 1954, Trois married Stephen R. Payne, with whom she shared an enduring love until his passing on April 4, 2013. Together, they created a home filled with love and laughter, raising one son, Brad Payne and their two daughters-Karen Wetterau, Karla Chunn,-in an environment that valued faith, education, community and service.

A vibrant member of her community, Trois became a dedicated Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were in scouts, guiding young girls with patience and kindness. Her faith was central to her life; as a member of First Christian Church, she actively participated in the choir, the Christian Women's Fellowship, Bible studies, and coordinated bereavement meals for those in need. She cherished the friendships formed within the Keystone Sunday School Class and was an enthusiastic participant in the Lubbock Women's Club. She also enjoyed attending the Lubbock Symphony Concerts.

Trois is survived by her son Brad Payne and daughter-in-law Kathy Payne; her daughter Karen Wetterau and son-in-law Cave Wetterau; and her daughter Karla Chunn and son-in-law John Chunn. She was a proud grandmother to Stephen Wetterau, Michael Payne, David Wetterau, Mason Payne, Kristen Chunn, Mackenzie Chunn, and Erin Chunn, as well as a loving great-grandmother to Coraline Payne.

A graveside service will take place at the City of Lubbock Cemetery on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM, where she will be laid to rest.

Her Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church, where all are invited to reflect on her life and legacy.

As we remember Trois Inez Payne, we celebrate a life well-lived-filled with love, music, and unwavering devotion to family, friends, and her community. Her spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched.

Trois was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen R. Payne; parents; Arch Bradley and Ruby Griffin Muncy, sister, Bobbie Atwood and brother, Buzz Muncy.
