Thomas P. Birnie, 80, of New York passed peacefully on March 14, 2024. He was born on May 11, 1943, to Thomas P. Birnie and Rose (Mullaney) Birnie in Jersey City, NJ. Thomas graduated from St. Peter's Prep in 1961, Manhattan College of Engineering with a B.S. in 1965, then pursued his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. graduating in 1968, and thereafter pursued a successful and
fulfilling career in the intermodal industry, holding several executive positions. Throughout his long-standing career, Thomas worked at REA Express, then served as Vice President at Interpool, Inc., President of TRAC Intermodal, and President of Third Avenue Solutions, an investment company.
Thomas was an avid sailor who loved sailing on his boat, and he traveled the world for work and leisure. He was adventurous and lived life to the fullest! Thomas will be missed as he was a kind, generous, and caring person!
In addition to his parents, Thomas was predeceased by his sister, Margaret (Birnie) Miller, John Birnie, his sister Regina (Birnie) DeStefano, his 4 brothers-in-law, William Miller, Robert O'Neill, Roger Louf, Peter DeStefano, and his sister-in-law, Irene (Grey) Birnie.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Claudia Whitehead, his two sisters, Nancy (Birnie) O'Neill, and Jean (Birnie) Louf, his two sisters-in-law, Terrill (Whitehead) Jaroszewicz (Jash Jaroszewicz), and Darci Whitehead, and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom and experiencing his love for excellent food. He taught me about Lebanese food and his experiences learning about it. He treated us to Lebanese food in London.
Kind, Funny, successful man.
