When I was 12 years old, I met Toivi Blatt. I was a 6th grader in Issaquah, WA, and we watched "Escape from Sobibor" in our World History class. I remember so vividly the feel of the bullet in his jaw as I ran my small fingers across it. His story, and the story of all of the surviving members of Sobibor has stuck with me for 25 years. I went on to teach middle school history, and I always tell the tale of Sobibor when I teach about the Holocaust. I have followed Toivi through the years, but in the fury that is my life as a mother and a teacher, I had missed the news of his passing. I will never forget, Toivi. Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for passing your legacy on to those of us who will continue to fight intolerance, hatred, and injustice. You meant a great deal to me and your memory will live on in me and my students forever. Thank you!

Toivi Blatt visited my students in Puyallup, Washington, year after year. After studying the Holocaust, writing research papers, and viewing the film "Escape from Sobibor," Toivi would grace us with his story. Students were spellbound as they listened, spoke with him personally, felt the bullet still in his jaw, saw him smile and enjoyed his joking with them--always keeping his sense of humor and always with dignity. His presence and story changed the lives of thousands of young people. He touched all of our lives in lasting ways--teaching us that we must learn to accept, at least tolerate, rather than hate. Thank you, Toivi, for being our hero and role model. --Janet Bosarge-Walraven

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

It's always amazing to me to hear the stories of survivors like Thomas but also can be so sad to hear how cruel people can be to others. May Thomas rest and be freed from his nightmares. May his family and friends find comfort in Gods promise in Isaiah 65:17 " For look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will no be called to mind, nor will hey come into the heart".

Thank you for your sacrifice in remembering and telling others of the horrors so they may not be repeated. Our freedoms today depend on remembering the times freedom was lost.

Dear family: I would like to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of your beloved father, grandfather, and friend, Mr. Blatt. Despite all he went through, his humility and endurance are qualities that I particularly admire from him. I was never there, but his story touches my heart and makes me imagine the painful moments he faced. I'm very happy that he was able to have a family of his own, and that you were able to enjoy having him with you. Although in times like this we can never find the right words that can explain how sorry we are for you loosing a loved one, our hearts goes to you, assuring you that his memory will be never forgotten. He now rest in God's hands, and I hope that our Heavenly Father become your source of comfort and strength to help you endure this moment - Ps 102:17 He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute; He will not despise their prayer. Please accept my sincere condolences.
