Thomas Winslow Carll
(May 28, 1944 -September 4, 2024)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas (Tom)
Carll on the 4 th day of September 2024. Surrounded by family and friends,
Tom was reunited with his wife Sherry and the Lord after a long and
courageous battle with Parkinson's and heart disease.
Tom was a proud man; smart, hard-working, and too stubborn for his own
good, with a witty sense of humor that made even the most serious of folks,
crack a smile. Born and raised in Southern Maine, Tom had an "eventful"
upbringing, to say the least. He met and wed the love of his life Sherry
Devou (Carll) at the young age of 17 and they began their family with the
birth of their son, Shawn, and daughter, Lori shortly thereafter. Determined
to create a better life for himself and his family, Tom enlisted in the army
where his strong work ethic and natural leadership qualities allowed him to
quickly move up the ranks to sergeant. After 3 years of service, he began
his next chapter back in Southern Maine with his wife and kids, where he
worked many jobs, most notably he earned the title of master electrician
before he found his home at Oakhurst Dairy as an engineer, for over 40
years. Outside of work Tom loved to spend time with his wife Sherry,
continuously renovating and improving their beautiful two-story home on
Mountain view road in Gray and running road races, most importantly the
Beach to Beacon 10k and the 7 Boston marathons he completed, earning
him the name "marathon man". Tom also loved to travel and spend time
with his 6 grandchildren (who knew him as bumpa), over the years they
went to Hawaii, South Carolina, and Disney World, not to mention their
annual trip to Funtown every summer. After 54 years his wife Sherry
passed unexpectedly in 2016, and Tom's world was flipped upside down.
As devastated as he was, he persevered and began again, moving into
Ashton Gardens Retirement home where he became a well-loved resident,
professional bingo player, and bocci ball enthusiast. Tom was diagnosed
with Parkinson's in 2018, and he fought courageously (and stubbornly) until
his very last breath.
Tom is survived by his children; Shawn Carll and wife Rachel, daughter Lori
Deshaies and husband Daniel. Grandchildren; Matthew Robertson,
Melissa Robertson, Thomas (Dillon) Carll, Dakota Carll and wife Anna,
Dominick (Nick) Carll and wife Courtney, and Tasia Carll.
Great-Grandchildren; Gabriel Wright, Davis Carll and Natalie Carll
His sisters; Joan Hunnewell and husband Rodney, Jean Libby, and Kathy
Haskell.
His Sister in laws; Darcel Devou, Maureen Devou, JoJo Brown, and
Heather Hanes,
and his niece (surrogate daughter), Dawn Greene and his best buddies his
cats Randilynn & Chuck.
Tom is predeceased by his mother, Marion Babb, his father, Henry Carll,
and his brother, Richard (Dick) Carll. Granddaughter Talitha Morningstar Carll.
The family would like to thank all the people who helped Tom in his last few
months of life, including his care team; Andrea, Shelly, Stacy, Brenda and
Julie), his massage therapist; Robyn and the staff and residents of Ashton
Gardens who he considered family and which there is too many to name.
