Thomas Cusmina Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Mar. 19, 2025.
Thomas ( "Tommy") Cusmina, 70, passed away peacefully in his home on March 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on December 16, 1954, to the late Thomas & Eda Cusmina and grew up in Moorestown, N.J. He attended Rutgers University where he received a B.A.in History and an M.S. in Systems Inventory Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, CA.
Tommy had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned several companies including one concentrating on Virtual Education and Training and another a food service business specializing in Russian food. He was passionate about cooking and made special dishes that he always said no one else could make except him. He would start cooking months in advance for his Easter feast and loved having family and friends together.
Tommy proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 19 years, retiring as a Lt. Commander. After leaving the Navy in 1998, he held various Analyst type positions working as a Contractor supporting the military. He served on the Board of Directors for Operation Vets with Nets, a charitable organization which is dedicated to honoring and supporting our veterans and their families.
Traveling, ballroom dancing, writing, storytelling and playing board games with his family were only a few of his interests. After holiday dinners, the Trivial Pursuit game came out, sides were drawn, and the challenge would begin! Tom even went so far one year to award trophies to the winners. Guess who won! He had a strong faith and was passionate about teaching Sunday School to middle school students at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
The joy of his life was his family. He is survived by his loving wife Joanne (Conaty), son Nicholas and wife Susie, Casey and wife Teo, Stepdaughter Courtney and husband Jaye, his sister Diana and husband Jack and was a proud grandfather to Olivia, Iris, Jayce, and Jacob. He is also survived by his niece Melissa, nephew Chris and many close relatives and friends.
A Visitation & Trisagion Service will be held on Sunday, March 23rd, from 6pm to 8pm at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts, 2002 Laskin Rd. in Va Beach, with the Trisagion beginning at 6:30pm. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, March 24th at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 621 First Colonial Rd, VA Beach. A private internment service will take place following the funeral service at Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 N. Great Neck Rd, VA Beach 23451. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org) or St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Virginia Beach.

Tom and I go back to AOCS in Pensacola during the record hot summer of 1980. We were shipmates onboard Nimitz.

Joanne, I was saddened to hear about Tom and am keeping you and the family in prayer. You were such a blessing to Tom throughout his illness and took very good care of him; he was fortunate to have you in his life. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

There was a magnificent sunset Monday evening as God received a soul; an excellent start for a sailor beginning a new voyage. You and your family have been and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
