Short Funeral Home - DelmarIt is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas E. Dickey, III, SFC, USA(RET), best known to everyone as Bad Daddy. He left us peacefully at his home in Laurel, Delaware, on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on April 8, 1953, in New London, Connecticut, Tom lived a life defined by grit, humor, loyalty, and a stubborn streak that somehow made him even more lovable. Tom was a man who served his country, his family, and anyone who needed a steady hand or a sharp word to set them straight. He dedicated his life to military service, beginning in the Coast Guard, continuing in the National Guard, and ultimately shaping countless futures as a U.S. Army recruiter. He had a gift for seeing potential in people long before they saw it in themselves, and he never hesitated to nudge, push, or sarcastically prod them toward it. To those who knew him well, he was the Old Grumpy Grinch with a heart far bigger than he would ever admit. His love language was sarcasm, his advice was blunt, and his loyalty was absolute. He could make you laugh when you didn't want to, argue with you to keep you sharp, and show up for you without ever needing to be asked. Beneath the gruff exterior was a man who loved deeply, protected fiercely, and took pride in the family he built. Tom leaves behind a legacy carried on by his children: Awenita Hensley (Stuart), Veronica Dickey, Tommiee Jean Dickey (Tommy), Thomas Dickey, IV (Angela), Franklyn Dickey, Sr. (Marilyn), and Cassandra Dickey. He was a proud Bad Daddy to 16 grandchildren Patra Pamm Silvia (Ethan), Kyle Hensley (Victoria), Storm Birkbeck, Rachel Birkbeck, Ben Birkbeck, Andrew Emilyta (Kristina), Selena Francese, Isabella Francese, Thomas E. Dickey, V (Shania), Caleb Dickey, Ariana Dickey, Gabriella Dickey, Pamela Dickey, Skyler Dickey, Frankiee Dickey, and Franklyn Dickey, Jr. and a great-grandfather to Kellyn Howell and Alanis Stevens. He is also survived by his sister, Mildred Dickey, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever remember his humor, his stories, and his unmistakable presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. Dickey, Jr. and Mildred Veronica Dickey; the love of his life, Deborah "Debbye" Louise Dickey; his grandsons, Peyton Dickey and Daryl Dickey; his brother, John Dickey; and his brother in law, Franklin Herren, Jr. A celebration of Bad Daddy's life will be held on April 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Nita and Stu's home. We ask that you keep the Dickey family in your thoughts and prayers as they honor a man who was equal parts tough and tender, sarcastic and sincere, and unforgettable in every way. In remembrance of SFC Dickey, contributions may be sent to VITAS Healthcare, 30265 Commerce Drive, Suite 202, Millsboro, DE 19966. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
