Thomas Egan

Thomas Egan, born on July 2, 1934, passed away February 20, 2026, surrounded by his family. Devoted husband to Cynthia and father of six to Debra (John), Mary Beth (David), Gina (Pino), Claudia, Peter, and Tara (Brian). He loved his nine grandchildren: Evan, Ben, Tom, Mollie, John Patrick, Will, Andrew, Fiona, and Kathleen. He also was an adored uncle to many nieces and nephews and loved his cousins, friends, and family with all his heart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Cynthia and brothers, Edward, William and his sister, Ellen.

Thomas was born in the Crotona Ave neighborhood of the Bronx to Anna and Edward Egan. He met the love of his life, Cynthia, at a Legion of Mary meeting at the St. Martin of Tours parish. Thus began a 67-year marriage of love and laughter.

In his early career, he worked for the New York Post and Sears. Dad then was a stagehand in the Electric Department out of IATSE Local 52 during the Golden Age of television, working on TV shows such as Car 54 and Playhouse 90. He then worked at NBC news covering political conventions, city riots and NYC local stories during which he met memorable characters from the 1960's and 70's. He also worked on many movies including Kramer vs Kramer, Raging Bull, Ragtime and the Fan. As a stagehand out of IATSE Local 1 his final job at Sesame Street included many fun years and great anecdotes.

He resided in the wonderful community of Netherland Gardens for over 62 years and was a member of St. Margaret's parish. Our dad was a great artist in many mediums. He created memorable Halloween decorations for our apartment hall including a replica of Jaws and a flying saucer rigged from the sixth-floor roof. For Christmas, he built winter wonderland train boards and through his life he painted beautiful oils and watercolors. Our apartment was a testament to his woodworking skills and ability to organize anything. Our Dad could pack a car like a tangram puzzle. His creativity was boundless, his talent to fix anything was well known, he cooked gourmet dinners, but most of all his sense of humor and storytelling ability was unmatched. Cynthia and Tom were a couple who always knew how to enjoy life and most of all cherished their family. We will miss him so much and envision mom and dad reunited dancing to their wedding song No Not Much.

Reposing will be held on Friday, February 27th, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, NY. Mass of the Christian Burial Service is Saturday, February 28 at 9:00 am, at St. Margaret of Cortona Church, 6000 Riverdale Ave., Bronx, NY. Burial will take place at the Tappan Reformed Church Cemetery, Tappan, NY.
