Thomas Edward Elkins, age 96, a cherished soul born in the quiet embrace of Bloomfield, Indiana on April 26, 1929, embarked on his final journey on June 16, 2025, peacefully at his residence in Norman, Indiana. A bastion of joy and laughter, Thomas navigated life with a buoyant spirit, known by family and friends as a happy man whose humor could illuminate any room. His talent as a storyteller brought smiles and warmth to those gathered around him, making even the simplest moments together feel profound.

A dedicated Christian by faith, Thomas found immense joy in the tapestry of life, woven together with love for his family and a passion for the great outdoors. He invested countless hours cultivating his garden, where the nurturing of each plant mirrored his caring heart. Hunting and fishing were not merely hobbies, but delightful pursuits that connected him with nature, allowing him to share these treasured experiences with his loved ones. Family dinners held a special place in his heart, where the bonds were tightened with every shared laugh and cherished memory.

As a devoted caregiver, Thomas epitomized the vows taken in love when he lovingly tended to his wife, Leathy Earl Elkins, during her illness, showcasing a commitment that spanned an impressive 68 years. His love extended beyond words, embracing the little moments spent together, underlining the depth of his character and the essence of his relationships.

The joys of life also included the thrill of riding UTVs with his grandson, a joyful activity that bestowed cherished memories, cementing bonds across generations. He doted upon his dog, Molly, who was a faithful companion and a source of comfort through the seasons of life.

Thomas leaves behind a legacy of unwavering kindness and joy, remembered fondly by his son Leonard Elkins and his wife Carol of Norman, Indiana; his daughter Edna Elkins of Salem, Indiana; daughter Penny Shelton and her husband Dale of Brownstown, Indiana; and daughter Bonnie Hunsucker of Medora, Indiana. His ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren will carry forward the lessons of love, laughter, and family unity that he imparted throughout his life.

He now joins his beloved wife, Leathy, firmly held in the arms of eternity, alongside his father, Thomas Elkins, his mother Opal Deckard Elkins, his son Thomas Wayne Elkins, son-in-law Mike Hunsucker, and a cherished circle of sisters—Kathleen Cowles, Fern Neeson, Carolyn Greathouse, and Geneva Greathouse. Among the departed is also his great-great-grandson, Nick Mifflin, and granddaughter Melissa Dawn Elkins, whose spirits linger like whispers of warmth in the hearts of those who remain.

Thomas Edward Elkins, a remarkable gardener of life, nurtures his legacy among the stars, a tapestry of stories yet to be told, and a laughter echoing through the corridors of time. His spirit endures in the hearts of his family, a gentle reminder of the joy and love he so generously gave to all.

The family has chosen cremation and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
