Thomas Patrick Gerszewski, born October 24, 1948, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully at his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 1, at the age of 76.
Tom spent his early years in Oslo, MN, before moving with his family to Wadena, MN, in 1960, where he formed life-long friendships. After graduating from Wadena High School in 1966, he attended the University of Minnesota and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving two years in West Germany.
Upon returning, he married Peggy O’Neill. They settled in Muscatine, Iowa, where Tom began his short career as a radio DJ. Soon after, he returned to Wadena to support the family business, where Wadena Lanes became a gathering place for friends and families, especially during Minnesota's long winters.
In 1984, Tom brought his family to Red Wing, MN, where he became a community fixture as owner and operator of Red Wing Liquor. He spent the next decade providing for his family and enjoying trips to the Hunting Shack, fishing on Lake of the Woods, and finally at the family cabin on Cass Lake.
Later, he moved north to manage Menahga Municipal Liquor Store, where he enjoyed connecting with the community. He retired in 2013, devoting his time to his Redeye, MN, property, crafting wood projects, and creating trails for his eight grandchildren. In recent years, he developed a deep love for the desert, spending winters in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Tom was a one-of-a-kind personality who wasn’t afraid to be himself. Known for his great conversation, wit, and movie quotes, he will be missed dearly by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Tom is survived by his family: sister Rosemary; former wife Peggy; children Richard (Nichole), Riley (Rebecca), Charlie (Marisol), and Katy Cotterman (Matt); and grandchildren: Bennett, Brody, Rhys, Tiago, Edward, Henry, Phoenix, and Isla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and IG; sisters Justine and Susanne; and his loyal pup, Buddy.
Tom will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, with a memorial service to celebrate his life planned for the spring.
