Thomas Gordon, 80, of
Scotland, SD passed away on January 6, 2026, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Montrose. Visitation with family present will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 5 – 7 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm, at St. George Catholic Church in
Scotland, SD.
Thomas F. Gordon was born November 7, 1945, to Fred and Rosalyce (Kappenman) Gordon. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1963. Tom married Judy Jorgensen on March 20, 1965, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Montrose. He worked at the elevator in Montrose before moving the family to Manning and
Fort Dodge, IA for a job opportunity selling feed for Golden Sun. The family moved to
Parker, SD, and then Montrose after a few years, where Tom farmed and sold for several feed companies in the area, including Hubbard Milling Co. and Blue Chip Feeds. Eventually, Tom started his own companies, Montrose Feed Services and Tri-County Ag. He was a very successful salesman, winning many awards and trips throughout the years. The family relocated to Lesterville in 1994 and settled in Scotland in 2001. During this time, he worked with Pharmco and Amway.
Tom was a fan of all sports, but baseball was his passion. He played until the age of 69, competing in the Over 40s, 50s, and 60s Men's Senior Leagues in Florida and Arizona. The teams won 4 Men's Senior League national championships, and Tom was inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. Tom also enjoyed golfing, restoring Farmall tractors, doing puzzles, and watching westerns, but he especially loved watching his children and grandchildren compete in their sporting events.
Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy; 9 children: Lisa (Russ) Kappenman of Lakeville, MN, Chad (Jan) Gordon, Troy Gordon, Kim (Brian) Kappenman, Ryan (Rani) Gordon, all of Montrose, Travis Gordon of Grand Forks, ND, James (Laura) Gordon of Mapleton, MN, Tracy Smith of Scotland, and Kelly (Diandra) Gordon of Harrisburg; 25 grandchildren: Taylor, Maddi, Sydney, Brandi, Stephanie, Xander, Zachary, Tionna, Josie, Jeanie, Katie, Andy, Jerry, Maleah, Gavin, Addison, Nora, Mason, Camden, Avery, Grayson, Anna, Ayla, Emmy, and Ben; 9 great-grandchildren: Avianna, Briella, Erica, Ella, Renley, Harrison, Haisley, Ayla and Ella; siblings Larry (Laurie) Gordon, Bob (Diane) Gordon, Steve Gordon, Paul Gordon, and Cathy (Tom) Guidarelli; sister-in-law Marion Gordon; valued family member Nick Smith; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Joseph, Kenny, and Colleen (Robert) Buckstead, sister-in-law Correne Gordon, and many friends.
