Thomas Worley "Tom" Greeson passed away peacefully at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on Monday, July 10, 2023.
He was born on November 5, 1938, in Chatsworth to Jack and Irene Chambers Greeson. His grandparents were Laura and Robert Chambers and Tom and Sarah Greeson. His brother, Bob Greeson, preceded him in death.
Tom attended elementary school in Austin, Texas, and at Chatsworth Elementary. His beloved mother, "Mock," was his fifth-grade teacher, and she had to paddle Tom just one time to get his attention. He was a 1956 graduate of Murray County High School and attended West Georgia College in Carrollton for two years. He then transferred to the University of Georgia in Athens. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1960.
He became a true and loyal sports fan of the "Dawgs" and endowed scholarships in football and in men's and women's basketball. He was especially proud of the two National Championship rings that were given to him by the university. As a native of the area, he was also a proud supporter of Dalton State College.
Tom's career was in banking at Cohutta Banking Company in Chatsworth, where he began as a young kid rolling coins for his grandfather, the bank president. He continued working at the bank through high school and college vacations. He was a teller, president, and chairman of the board.
Tom's love of travel took him and his wife throughout the world. For their last big trip, they treated their grown daughter to Paris, France; South Africa; and Zambia.
Golf was his game, and he continued to play until his health issues prevented him from doing so. A great trip for him and his wife was to the British Open at Royal Portrush Golf Course in Portrush, Northern Ireland. Tom had the privilege of playing that course several times with a member-friend.
After moving from St. Simons Island to Atlanta in 2000, he began his volunteering phase of his life with the Atlanta Zoo and the famed Georgia Aquarium.
Tom was a member of the Baptist faith, and was very active all his life!
He is survived by "the love of his life," Jeannette Adams Greeson, his wife of 62 years. They are the parents of Becky McEntire (Dan), Lee Greeson (Susan), and Laura Greeson.
His three grandchildren, Kelly Shapiro (Scott), Hunter Henderson, and Elizabeth Henderson called him "Paw-Paw." He was proud of his great-grandchildren, Waylon Anderson, Ellie Henderson, Madison Casner, and Hank and Hoyt Henderson.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carolyn Greeson; niece, Krista Colvin (Michael); and nephew, Kevin Greeson. Several cousins also survive him.
Funeral services for Tom will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Chatsworth First United Methodist Church with Rev. Vince Smith and Rev. Graham Arp officiating. Tom will be laid to rest at Murray Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Peeples Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Chatsworth First Methodist Church (111 W Cherokee St, Chatsworth, GA 30705) or the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741).
