Thomas Clay Grey, age 82 of Cleveland, passed away Friday morning, January 19, 2024.
Thomas was born in Huntington, WV, he was a proud veteran and honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Mills. He retired from Dupont as an Electrical Engineer after 36 years of service and from Computer Science Corporation after eight years of service. At age 72, Thomas went back to college and received both Surgical Tech and Sterile Processing Tech Certificates and was employed with Memorial Hospital.
During his fulfilling life, he was an avid C1 Kayaker, a long-distance bike rider, and was a member of the Chattanooga Bicycle Club. He and his wife were members of a clogging team and the Choo Choo Country Dance Club. He was an advanced hiker and hiked to the top of Mount Rainier in Washington. He also enjoyed playing the banjo and traveling around the world visiting other countries.
Thomas had a wonderful sense of humor and was a very giving person. He deeply loved his family and friends and never met a stranger. He will truly be missed by all those who knew him.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Thomas and Eleanor “Rae” Grey; sisters, Gail Budzinski and Judy McElravy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 30 years, Belinda Grey; children, Lynne (David) Jacob, John (Alison) Grey, Thomas (Tina) Grey; sister, Patsy (Gene) Howard; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Stallings, Andrew Jacob, Emma and Lauren Grey; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Doug Lundquist and John Poinsatte; and their beloved cat, Simon.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon Thursday, January 25, 2024, in the chapel of Poole Funeral Home of Cleveland. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors concluding the service, with Dustan Weir, Art Clem, Doug Lundquist, John Poinsatte, Fred Buttner, and Denny Cloud will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to The American Heart Association.
