Thomas Alvin Guy, a devoted family man and respected member of his community, was born on February 23, 1947, and peacefully transitioned into his eternity on August 2, 2025, at his residence in Matthews.
A proud Army veteran, Thomas’s career began at Continental Can, where he demonstrated his industrious nature and dedication. His job was momentarily interrupted when he was drafted into the Army in 1968 and served honorably as a Military Police officer. Upon returning home in 1971, he resumed his work at Continental Can, which later evolved into Federal Paper Board, and subsequently International Paper. After 48 years of commitment and hard work, Thomas retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and resilience that inspired those around him.
Born and raised in Gibson, Thomas was a proud 1966 graduate of Glascock County High School. He spent many years in Avera during his children's upbringing before briefly living in Hephzibah, ultimately purchasing property in Matthews in 2012, where he was able to create his home which housed many great memories.
A man of great personality, Thomas was known for his happy-go-lucky demeanor and his unwavering independence. He was a hard worker, constantly busy, and took immense pride in being a great provider for his family. His love for his family, particularly his grandchildren, was apparent to all who knew him. Always quick with a joke, Thomas had a knack for bringing joy to any gathering, and he cherished the moments spent with loved ones.
Faith played a significant role in Thomas’s life; having accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at a young age, he remained a lifelong member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, where he found community and support.
Thomas had a profound love for the outdoors and always kept himself active. He enjoyed visiting flea markets, watching classic westerns starring John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Lee Van Cleef, and spending time at local eateries like Huddle House and Peggy's to enjoy camaraderie and catch up on the latest news. He found great pleasure listening to the old classics of country music; he especially loved artists like Conway Twitty, George Strait, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. A passionate fan of the Braves and Atlanta Falcons, he also had an impressive collection of John Deere memorabilia and knives, reflecting his interests and hobbies.
Thomas is survived by his loving children, Michelle Rhodes (Scott) and Everette Guy (Cindy); his grandchildren, Burke Rhodes, Brandon Rhodes (Mallorie), Cody Guy, and Summer Guy; and his great-granddaughter, Adilynn Rhodes. He is also survived by his siblings, Jessie Cole, Janie Goolsby, Cicero Guy (Martha), and Susan Hobbs; along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura Peebles Guy and Alvin Jessie Guy, and his sister, Ellen Meeks.
Funeral services will be held on August 8, 2025, at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Mitchell, Georgia. Visitation will take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Michael Thigpen officiating; and the interment afterward in the family plot in the church cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers include Guy Cole, Michael Cole, Cody Guy, Ernie Kelley, Brandon Rhodes and Burke Rhodes.
