Thomas Eugene Harmon was born on February 29, 1948, in Laverne, OK to Harvie Boyd Harmon and Lelah Bonita McCarty. As a youth he was known for being very onery, getting into trouble wherever he went. He graduated high school as Valedictorian (of his class of 3) from Knowles High where he earned letters in both basketball and choir. He was drafted into the Army at the age of 19 and attended basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana. He was quickly shipped off to war and served two tours in Vietnam. While he was in Vietnam, he was a Crew Chief. He earned several accolades while serving: National Defense Service Medal, Expert Marksman on the M-14 and M-16, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Combat Medal, Air Medal, ACE Medal, and 2 O/S Bars. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
After the Army, Tom went to work at Southwestern Bell as a lineman, installing and fixing phone lines all over Oklahoma. He married the love of his life, Cynthia, on June 9, 1973, in
Follett, TX. They lived in Moore, OK and then Norman, OK where they would live until 1989. Tom and Cindy were unable to have children of their own and decided to try to adopt a child. After eight long years, they finally received the call that they were getting a little girl. This was probably the happiest day for both Tom and Cindy. They would welcome their new baby into their family on February 19, 1981.
Tom was very active in the church while living in Norman and called Trinity Lutheran Church his home church. There he spent countless hours working with the youth, holding various offices within the church, and being a pivotal member of the Eclectic Bible Study group there. In 1989, both Tom and Cindy decided to move to
Milwaukee, WI to attend the Lay Ministry Program at Concordia Lutheran University in
Mequon, WI. After spending a year in Wisconsin, they took a call to St. Paul Lutheran in
Groves, TX. They moved to Port Arthur, TX where they would eventually become missionaries to at risk youth there in Port Arthur at St. Mark Lutheran Church. He touched many kids lives while working at that church not just in a spiritual manner, but also as a Father figure.
Tom enjoyed many things throughout his life such as: square dancing with the Silver Spurs, leather work, ceramics, working in the church, working on cars, and spending time with his family.
Tom is preceded in death by Father Harvie Harmon, Mother Lelah Bonita McCarty, sister Dena Cummings, sister Bernadine Harmon.
