Thomas Hoeksema Obituary

Dr. Thomas Brian Hoeksema, Sr., age 79, of Grand Rapids, MI died unexpectedly in his home on September 30, 2025. The day before he died, most of his family celebrated his birthday together. He was delighted to be with everyone where he could give and receive many hugs, kisses, and loving words. His smile was deep and his eyes were sparkling.
He had kindness that seeped out of his pores. He loved people deeply. He made people feel like the center of the world. He leaned in close to listen. He was wise. He served on countless committees, boards, and organizations, but he also did the quiet work. He built bridges and relationships, often privately, and without the need for acknowledgement. He sought out and discovered beauty everywhere he went.
Tom loved the Lord, his family, his many friends, creation, orchestra music, playing his trumpet, inclusion for all, Grace Church, gardening, lexicology, traveling with Mary, snuggling babies, crokinole, good movies, good protests, a good view, racquetball, the mountains, reading, laughing, playing on the floor with his grandkids, hiking in the woods, watching his grandchildren in all their activities, being at the cottage, cooking, not necessarily in that order.
Tom earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Calvin University in 1968 and his PhD in Special Education from Michigan State University in 1975. He spent the majority of his career teaching at Calvin University where he was an integral part of establishing the Special Education Program. He dedicated his career to equality and inclusion for people with disabilities. His heart for inclusion extended beyond that; he spent the last part of his life working tirelessly for the inclusion of all people (especially the LGBTQIA+ community) in church and school spaces. Some causes that were important to him were inclusive schooling, lifting up women's gifts, accessibility in higher education, and healing racism. He was a true servant from the kitchen to the council room.
Tom thought and wrote copiously about life and death. After he died, the family found a note he had written: "I state unequivocally that I do not fear dying. I believe that my existence extends beyond mortal life and that death is a transition to a superior way of being. I look forward to being ever closer to God and to enjoying the flow of God's love forever. I know that someday I will turn around, and there you will be."
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Edna (Mastenbroek) Hoeksema, and Bernard and Jane (VanderGriend) Pekelder. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (Pekelder) Hoeksema, four children Tom Jr. (Stacia), Adam (Coy), Laura, and Jenny (Mark), and 19 grandchildren (Taryn, Seth, Shae, Tayva, Kahalah, Wasson, Ra'Kai, Kennadi, Tristin, Aydin, Ashtin, Noelle, Rowan, Piper, Gideon, Kai, Koda, Jovi, and Nico) and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Mary Koning (Harvey, deceased), his brother William (Angie) Hoeksema, his in-laws Anne and Michael Bruinooge, Ben and Pam Pekelder, Jane and Daniel Ward, Ruth Pekelder and Rick Huizinga, and many nieces and nephews. His family is devastated by his passing, and we will never be the same.
Visitation will be held at Grace Church (100 Buckley Ave SE in Grand Rapids) on Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. A memorial worship service will be held at Grace Church on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at 4:00 PM with a visitation hour immediately preceding the service at 3:00 PM. Donations for those who wish to make them could go to All Belong, the Pekelder Special Education Scholarship at Calvin University, or Treetops Collective.
In a note about his final wishes, Tom wrote, "Any love people felt from me spills out of my deep joy in being loved by God and my desire to be in the flow of that river."

Dr Hoeksema was my favorite professor at Calvin in the late 70s. He was kind to his students and generously shared his passion for education. Over the years I contacted Dr Hoeksema a few times and he always responded in a gracious and thoughtful way (remembering who I was years later.)

Condolences to his friends and family.

I was so blessed to have Tom as my professor, advisor, and friend. I could tell Tom stories forever! We had many laughs, a few tears, and an argument or two over many years of working together with student teachers after I left Calvin. I was so thankful to reconnect with him 3 years ago! What an incredible gift he was to so many. I pray that we all seek to live as he did, loving and caring for all people, as Jesus did. Rest well dear friend, you truly were a good and faithful servant.

I very much enjoyed Tom´s company on the outings of the Birding Interest Group of the Calvin CALL program. He was interested in all aspects of nature. A fine man. Who was fun to be with. I will miss him

I remember and respected Prof. Hoeksema. He was exactly what I was looking for in a mentor as I entered my career in Special Education. Every time I would see him after graduation he greeted me like I was the most important person at that moment. He had such a way of smiling and treating everyone with deep care! He was the best! Rejoicing in his heaven going!

I echo all of the sentiments regarding Tom. And I've enjoyed being on Facebook with him these past few years. I'll miss his presence - both his insight and his joy in life and loved ones. I would like to add my first "encounter" with Tom and I'm not even sure it was a direct one. I was working at Calvin's Student Volunteer Service (which became the Service-Learning Center). We received a communication from Tom, in which he kindly requested us to reserve the word "adoption" for bringing children into ones' family through formal adoption. He wanted his adopted children to know that their adoption was serious, committed. He felt that to use the word adoption for such things as adopting a cabbage patch doll or a grandmother diminished the word for his children. The thing that stood out to me was the seriousness of his love and commitment to his adopted children and I've been trying to be careful not to use the word adoption in a frivolous fashion ever since.

While I first met Tom when we were both on the Calvin University faculty, I got to know him more personally when he placed a winning bid for a lesson on fly fishing lesson at a fundraiser for Jubilee Center's International in Honduras. Besides my fishing lesson, this led to serval breakfast/lunch meetings and some hikes together. We found common interests in faith and its expression in social concerns, political views and more. I recognized in Tom a deep but unpretentious thinker and a lovely soul who put a compassionate faith into action. I give my most sincere condolences to Tom's family and friends who will miss his kind presence.

Tom was so welcoming to me as I arrived at Calvin. So down to earth, sincere, and loving. Then I get to know Tom jr. and Laura and I clearly see the the through line of God's grace in this family. Much love to you all.

Professor Hoeksema was my teacher 37 years ago. I called him last year to talk about inclusion in the church. He started by saying I remember that paper you wrote about Flannery OConner. 37 years and he remembered. A remarkable man who shaped the way I think about people.

Dr. Hoeksema was by far my favorite professor when I came to Calvin as a transfer student, majoring in Special Education, in the mid-80s. I was blessed to sit in his classes, and work in special education classrooms, under his tutelage. It was also a joy to reconnect on Facebook in recent years. He was a tremendous influence in my life as a teacher, and a believer, and I´m extremely saddened for all of us, and for you his family, to hear of his passing. But what a joyful reunion in Heaven!
