Thomas J. Hurcomb, 88, of Middletown Springs, Vermont, passed away on November 8, 2025, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on May 5, 1937, he was the son of Walter and Grace (Elefante) Hurcomb. He graduated from Seton Hall High School in Patchogue, Long Island, and Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, earning a degree in Business Administration with distinction.
Tom began his career in service to his country through the U.S. Air Force ROTC program. His assignments in Hawaii, the Fiji Islands, and Australia placed him at the center of early astronaut recovery operations during the formative years of America’s space program.
After completing his military service, Tom worked for a major oil company in several Northeast cities before returning to Vermont—a place he loved—to begin a distinguished 30-year tenure with Central Vermont Public Service Corporation. Over the course of his career, he rose to Vice President of Public Affairs, overseeing communications, governmental relations, and national policy work, as well as participating in international energy-exchange initiatives in Eastern Europe.
Civic engagement was a lifelong thread for Tom. He served in leadership roles with Rutland Public Access Television, the Vermont American Red Cross, the College of St. Joseph, regional trade and chamber organizations focused on economic development, and the Middletown Springs planning and building boards. His dedication to public service was matched by his belief in strengthening community wherever he lived.
Tom was previously married to Nancy McClallen, with whom he had four children: Martha, Jill, Christopher, and Paul. In 1997, he married his beloved wife, Linda Cameron, with whom he shared deep companionship, extensive travel, a blended and loving family life, and many cherished years together in Vermont.
Among his greatest joys were blue-bird ski days and summer trips to the beach, where he taught his grandchildren the art of boogie boarding and “old-school” body surfing. Tom was the spirited organizer behind countless family gatherings—from Notre Dame football weekends to annual beach weeks—creating traditions that strengthened family bonds and will be remembered for generations.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; his children Martha Dardani (Garrick) of Valatie, NY, Jill Byrlev (Carsten) of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Christopher Hurcomb (Krista) of Minneapolis, MN, and Paul Hurcomb (Diane) of Colorado Springs, CO; his daughter through marriage, Sarah Cameron Mifsud of Irvington, NY; his sister, Karen Tynan of North Adams, MA; eleven grandchildren—Liza, Filomena, Henrik, Magnus, Sam, Katie, Gabriel, Lydia, Paul IV, Matty, and Gavin; his great-grandchild, Viviana; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Grace Gray.
Tom will be remembered for his sharp mind, deep curiosity about national and world affairs, steadfast service to civic and state organizations, strong leadership, and his abiding love for family. He lived a full and meaningful life rooted in integrity, responsibility, and care for others. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Development Fund in Rutland, VT (msjvermont.org), the Middletown Springs Library (https://middletownspringslibrary.org/) or Vermont American Red Cross (https://americanredcross.donordrive.com/campaigns/Remembering- Thomas-Hurcomb).
