Thomas Allen Hutson, 91, of Hyde Park, passed from this life early on December 3, 2025 at Birch Creek Assisted Living in Smithfield, Utah.
He was born November 12, 1934 in Glendale, California to Walter Allen and Annabelle Gardiner Hutson. Tom and his brother William Gardiner attended a Catholic school intending to become priests. Tom’s love of the outdoors led him instead to pursue a degree in forestry at Montana State. While there he met Gaynell Johnsen, of Bear River City Utah. He ended up back in southern California working his way through school pursuing a degree in education. Gaynell found her way to California a short time later and they resumed dating. They married on December 20, 1958 and had four children each 18 months apart. He enjoyed a long career working in schools in California and Utah, mostly as a guidance counselor. He loved serving students and others, especially his family. He and Gaynell lived their lives to ensure their children had all they needed to grow and become whatever they wanted. In 1971, the family moved from southern California to River Heights, Utah and continued life’s journey there. Tom and Gaynell always said their main goal in life was to help their children and they were dedicated to that end. Their commitment to each other and the family lasted 61 years until Gaynell’s passing in 2019. In these later years, Tom valiantly fought off various forms of cancer and infections, he showed great determination in doing all he could to stay with us as long as he did, and finally could fight no more.
Tom is survived by sons Tony (Jeanne), Tim, daughter Anne, and son Don. He had 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Rita Hutson, Elise Henderson, and Gloria Hamilton. Also survived by Bosco. He had many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, brother Bill, in-laws Leron and Deanne Johnsen, Gail Hamilton, and Carl Henderson, nephew Miles Johnsen, niece Amanda Johnsen, and daughter-in-law Lisa.
He will be honored in a private family ceremony at Cache Valley Mortuary.
