Thomas Klein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2026.
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Thomas A. Klein, Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

Dr. Klein earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Rochester. Following residency, he served as an OBGYN in the U.S. Army. He subsequently joined the faculty at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 1993, Dr. Klein joined the faculty of Jefferson and worked with distinction until his retirement in 2023.Across his career, Dr. Klein was widely regarded as an extraordinary educator-beloved by residents, nurses, staff, and patients alike-and a remarkably skilled obstetrician. He trained generations of learners to center the patient in every decision, to practice evidence-based medicine long before it was the standard, and, of course, to master the art and judgment of forceps delivery.

Dr. Klein was renowned for his humility, unwavering support of trainees, and ability to maintain high standards while making others feel valued. He modeled collaborative practice-seeking input, sharing decision-making, and elevating the entire team. Many of us will continue to remember his signature aphorisms, emblematic of both his pragmatism and his wit, including reminders about the judicious use of laboratory tests, the importance of considering common diagnoses first, and the need to treat patients with both rigor and humanity.

He enjoyed fine dining but often noted that his favorite snacks were donuts and margaritas, specifically the blood orange one from El Vez. He enjoyed staying in touch with his trainees and sharing meals with them when schedules allowed.

The loss of Dr. Klein will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing and learning from him.

The Department of OBGYN at Jefferson takes comfort in knowing that his legacy of excellence will be continued by his trainees and colleagues, as well as the many individuals whose lives he touched. We are heartened in our time of sorrow to know that he passed comfortably at his second home, Jefferson.
