Thomas Koetter

Thomas Joseph Koetter of Altura, MN, age 78, died Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI.

Thomas, affectionately known as “Papa,” was born June 10, 1946 in Wabasha, MN, the son of Joseph and Gertrude (Frisch) Koetter. He attended Rollingstone Holy Trinity School. After graduating high school he met the love of his life, Carol Calvey, and the couple was united in marriage July 27, 1968 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minnieska. Tom worked for H&R Block for a short period of time, prior to going into business for himself. He owned and operated Tom’s Tax Service in Lewiston. Tom loved playing Cribbage, teaching his children, grandchildren, and anyone who wanted to learn how to play. Tom always had a positive attitude, and faced his struggles with courage. He was an amazing man, with strong faith, and a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol; 4 sons: Richard (Sara), William (Kristi), Michael (Heather), and Brent (Carmen); grandchildren: Christopher, Colton, Kadyn, Kaige, Ryan, Brody, Summer, Khord, Brynn, and Kohen; sister, Carol Strouse; brother-in-law, Bob (Kathy) Calvey; and sister-in-law, Mary (Alan) Franson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws, Bud and Myrtie Calvey; siblings: Margaret Ann (Pete) Buie, Jolene (Henry) Flatt, David (Klara) Koetter, and Judy (Ted) Peterson; and brother-in-law, Bob Strouse.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 10:30 am at St. Rose of Lima in Lewiston, MN. Visitation will be Monday, July 29 from 4 - 7 PM at St. Rose of Lima, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Oak Ridge, MN.
