Attending Tom Kronauge's funeral at St. Charles Borromeo Church this morning was tantamount to the end of an era for me.
My family and Tom's were both long-time members of Corpus Christi Parish, where Tom ("Butch") and I and my two older brothers, Jerry ("Jake") and Patrick ("Denny") went to grade school and then on to Chaminade High School.
In fact, the Kronauges lived next door on Kenwood Avenue to my Aunt Madelaine and Uncle Frank Ganther and my two older cousins, Mary Ellen and Kathleen, who sometimes babysat me there.
Tom and my brother Jerry were classmates at Corpus Christi and Chaminade, where Tom played varsity tennis and Jerry played varsity football and basketball.
After Thomas More College, I began my teaching career at Trotwood-Madison as an English teacher, and for five years coached the boys tennis team. A struggling program for many years, by my fourth and fifth years, the Rams were one of top teams in the area, even stopping Oakwood's 30+years of league dominance. I say one of the top teams, but with clear inferiority to Alter High School, led by the local sensation, Bobby Kronauge, who invariably beat my very good first singles, Bill Kucharsky. What made these matches so special for me was connecting with Tom, there to watch his son's matches.
Fast forward some years to where I was working as a principal in the Oakwood City Schools and living with my wife, Norma, and three children. Julie, Mike, and Matt, in the shadow St. Charles Grade School and Alter High, where Julie and Mike attended Alter at the same time as Dan Kronaugue, who was now the star Alter tennis player while Julie was a Lancerette and Mike played football and baseball.
Throughout our married years, of course, Norma and I have been insured by Tom's company and served by Tom, Bob, and now Dan.
Although on February 5, 2021, my brother Jerry passed away from the effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam (a West Point football player) in Florida, we didn't hold the Celebration of Life until June of 2021. Accompanied by his son Dan, Tom very graciously attended along with other Corpus and Chaminade friends and his former neighbor and my cousin, Mary Ellen Ganther Smith.
What was truly fitting was that Tom's funeral was today on the fifth anniversary of my brother Jerry's passing.
God love you Tom, and may you and Lois be reunited in Heaven!

Butch was a part of my extended family. I knew him and Red and all their children who went to St. Charles School and Alter High School with mine. Butch was a fine family man and a good father.

To the Kronauge Family,
I am so sorry for your loss of such and incredible man. My dad lived with him at Fairmont and I loved talking to him. He was so proud of all his children and families. I was blessed to meet some of you and I loved seeing how you loved and cared for him. You are a special family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
