Obituary published on Legacy.com by Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home on May 20, 2025.
Tom's journey through life was one of connection, fun and generosity. Born in Trenton, NJ, at age two the family moved to Levittown. The family later called Yardley home. Tommy graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1967, where he began making friendships that would last for a lifetime. His academic path led him to Temple University in Philadelphia where he lived for several years. Tommy then set his stage for a life well lived and celebrated in the world of hospitality-a career that would span decades and touch countless lives, with memories that are held in our hearts forever.
In 1974, Tom made his home in Lambertville/New Hope where he became a beloved fixture in the community.
Tommy's tapestry of all things joyous, his love of music, food and drink, and people led him to work in some of the most cherished restaurants in the area, including the Golden Pheasant and Hamilton Grill Room, and more recently Karla's and Zoubi in New Hope. Those who had the privilege of experiencing his presence behind the bar or at the table knew that Tom's dedication to his craft was only matched by his welcome of and love for the people he served with his smart wit and class, forging lifetime friendships throughout his life's journey.
Tom was more than just a professional in the restaurant world; he was a storyteller, a well read philosopher and a historian. He was a sincere friend to all who shared his path. His infectious laugh could light up a room, and his stories – often as colorful and rich as the music and friends he adored – captured the hearts and imaginations of those he would dazzle with his smile and essence of kindness. A passionate and knowledgeable record collector, Tom was a living archive of Motown and Big Band music. His expertise was unmatched, and he could spend hours discussing the intricacies of artists, albums and soul music. Then came club music during the heyday of New Hope's vibrant gay community where Tommy never missed an opportunity to dance the night away. Often holding court with beloved and illustrious characters who together cleared the path for so many to live their best lives, while celebrating the wonderment of the era.
His circle of friends was vast, a testament to his depth of love and loyalty. Tommy took great joy in the friendships he shared over the years, whether they were made through work, music or the shared experiences of living in such a unique and vibrant corner of the world. His laughter and wisdom will be missed more than words can express.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Marie Lear. He is survived by his sister Jane T. Lear and her wife Susan Myers of Santa Cruz, CA; his cousin Rick Roth and his wife Gloria of Hamilton, NJ and his many, many friends. His family, both biological and chosen, were the core of his life. He cherished them with all his heart while embracing them with his appreciation.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Tuesday, May 27, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Zoubi Restaurant, 7 West Mechanic Street, New Hope, PA. There will be a time to share memories, raise a glass, and laugh as our dear friend Tommy would have wanted us to.
