Thomas Maye Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nutmeg State Cremation Society on Feb. 20, 2026.
Thomas Kenneth Maye, 88, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday February 3rd, 2026. Born on June 27, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Tom lived a full and richly textured life shaped by his children, enduring friendships, and a deep love of movies, books, and time spent outdoors.

Raised in Brooklyn, he attended St. John Preparatory School and went on to graduate from Villanova University. He was commissioned in the United States Navy, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong sense of discipline, loyalty, and quiet pride in service. Following his naval service, he earned his Master Electrician license and went on to serve as Executive Vice President of Welsbach and Principal of Acolyte Electric Corp. He later worked as an Associate with Eastern Sales until his retirement.

Tom lived most of his life in Manhattan before moving to Bedford, New York, to raise his children. He later returned to Manhattan and ultimately settled in Darien, Connecticut to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren.

Those who knew Tom best remember him for his ability to throw a great party, an innate talent to efficiently pack a car, and unending knowledge of history and movies. He loved hosting a lively evening, believed firmly in the proper way to make a martini, and delighted in spirited conversation filled with history, film references, and perfectly remembered details. His stories were vivid, his wit sharp, and his hospitality unmatched. Whether at the grill or in the kitchen, he took pride in creating memorable meals, especially brunch and custom-made omelets. He honored tradition and valued good manners. He also possessed a quiet talent with his hands, building barns, bookshelves, and countless projects for those he loved.

Winters often found him in Vermont, embracing the slopes and long-standing friendships. Summers held a special place in his heart. In his younger years he could be found sailing on the Sound, followed by many cherished summers spent on Nantucket Island, where some of his fondest memories were made surf casting at dawn. After his children were grown, he found joy spending summers in Cape May Point, New Jersey with his dear friend Emelia, a time marked by companionship, reflection, and shared laughter.
