Thomas McCoy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Neal Funeral Home on Mar. 5, 2026.
Thomas Nevil "Nick" McCoy, Jr.

1935 - 2026

Nick McCoy, age 90, of Catlettsburg, KY, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on March 4, 2026.

He was born November 28, 1935, to the late Thomas N. McCoy, Sr and Jewel Allen McCoy. A 1953 graduate of Elkton High School then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War upon the U.S.S. Essex as an Airman where his unit received the Presidential Unit Citation.

Nick is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Phoeba Katherine Nolen McCoy and one brother George Allen McCoy. He is survived by his two loving children, Melissa "Missi" McCoy and husband Don McKinney of Summerfield, FL; Thomas N. McCoy III and his wife Michelle of Catlettsburg, KY; two grandsons, Thomas "Billy" McCoy, wife Hannah and great granddaughter, Emmie Kate McCoy; Bradley Joe McCoy and his wife Sadonna all of Catlettsburg, KY. He is also survived by sister-in-law Martha Clara Marshall, Ashland, KY and dedicated nieces Connie Wooten and Kristi Maggard, Denvil Kim Marshall, William K. Mills, Kathy Marshall, Lori Wooten, Sandy McCoy and Scott McCoy.

Nick was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Ashland and attended there 70 years. He attended the Senior Sunday School Men's Department and loved the fellowship with his brothers in Christ. He also participated in the Living Christmas Tree and Judgment House many years. He and Phoeba looked forward to entertaining their Sunday School classes in their home each holiday season.

His professional career was with the U.S. Postal service where he began unloading mail bags at the train station on Carter Avenue, then moved his way up the ladder at the Ashland Post Office. He retired as the Postmaster in Russell, Ky and continued to be a member of the National Mailhandlers Association.

Nick was well known in the tri-state area for his knowledge of just about everything and anything collectible. He began his collecting in the early 60s buying and selling coins; he was very active in the Tri-State Coin Club, helped organize their annual show each year and made lifelong friendships.

At one time, Nick assembled the largest known personal Eisenhower memorabilia collection in the nation. A longstanding member of the Political Americana Collectors, he so enjoyed traveling to shows with his long time friend Gene Heide.

Over the years Nick has organized extensive collections of Ashland KY items, was a licensed Auctioneer and a reliable appraiser. He was a GFWC Booster and enjoyed traveling and seeing the country wherever conventions took them.

Nick so enjoyed and rarely missed attending the local gospel sings, spending time with his grandchildren, enjoyed traveling with his family, rebuilding and refinishing old furniture and living up to being "The Real McCoy."

A Celebration of Life with Military Rights in honor of Nick will be held at Neal funeral home in Catlettsburg, KY on Sunday March 8 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation for family and friends will be at from 1pm to 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Wounded Warrior Project. Neal/Kilgore and Collier is honored to be serving the family of Nick McCoy.
