A couple of times, we hitchhiked over 400 miles (each way) from Norfolk to Charleston for a 72-hour liberty. A story about it is at https://www.insectman.us/misc/going-home.htm.
He was a fantastic friend and fellow sailor.
After our service time he was a great help to me by using his business skills.
Tom (it was his idea) took the picture which I cherish. It is when my parents came to visit.
