Thomas D. Miller, Jr., 61, a beloved son, husband, and father, passed away on April 25, 2025 in Summit, New Jersey, surrounded by family.
Born in Richmond, Virginia to Thomas and Marianne Miller, Tom spent his childhood in Westfield, New Jersey before moving to Indiana, Pennsylvania.
Tom earned his B.S. in Industrial Management from Carnegie Mellon University in 1986. Following graduation, he began his career at Citicorp in their operations training program. This catalyzed a successful and diverse career in operations management and trading for several banks, sales leadership for Bloomberg LP and financial software development for Matrix Applications. Tom had extensive knowledge of financial products and software sales, but his true skills lied in his ability to be a leader. He loved to teach and mentor others. For the last eight years of his life, Tom worked for Matrix Applications in New York City where he served as the Managing Director of their product development group.
Tom lived an active life outside his career. Tom's innate curiosity was reflected in his countless interests which ranged from cycling, motorcycle and horseback riding to language study, playing the guitar, astronomy, woodworking, and photography, just to name a few. Tom also loved to travel. He had a goal to travel to Japan next year and had been taking Japanese lessons on Duolingo every day for 391days. He never ever missed a day. He enjoyed science fiction novels and books focused on strengthening his intelligence and mind and solving problems at work. Tom had an enduring love of music which was wide ranging, from The Clash and The Who to more esoteric and modern classical pieces. Each pursuit reflected his respect for beautiful systems, whether natural, manmade, or imagined.
Supporting his community was also important to Tom: in his 20's he taught weekly math classes to young people trying to get their GED at the Odyssey House, a drug and rehab center in NYC, he was a town council treasurer from 1997-2001, he assisted with his son's cub scouts troop, and he served from 2016-2019 as the treasurer of the Westfield High School Band Parents Association. Helping others was paramount to the kind of person that Tom was and his legacy of helping others continued after his death by donating his organs to those in need.
Above all else, Tom's family was most important to him. He and his wife Elizabeth "Liz" met at Citicorp and were married for 33 years. They have two children: Evelyn 25 and Wyatt 23. Together as a family, they enjoyed traveling and sharing their passions with one another.
Tom leaves behind his loving wife, Elizabeth; his children, Evelyn and Wyatt Miller; his parents, Thomas and Marianne Miller of Heathsville, Virginia; his sister, Lucie André and her husband, Frank and niece Parrish of Baltimore, Maryland and a vast circle of extended family, friends and colleagues who will miss his wit, wisdom, support, and loyalty.
A memorial gathering celebrating Tom's life will be held on Saturday, June 7th at 11:00 am at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mane Stream, Inc., Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, Bike New York or an organization meaningful to the donor.

Tom , My old friend and colleague
To say you will be missed by many is an understatement.
One of my fondest memories of you is when I told you about a telescope I received as a gift . I will never forget your response. " Wow do you know what you have there" " I went to telescope camp ! Can I come over and set it up for you? " Naturally I accepted the offer. I still couldn't beleive there was a such a thing as telescope camp.
God bless you and may you rest in peace.
I will take a peak thru that lense and I am sure you will waving down.
Till we meet again.

I can still visualize turning the corner on 14th floor, walking down the sales rows towards my desk, and seeing Tom banging away on the phones with a smile. He lit up a room for sure.

Very sad to hear of Tom's passing.
Tom took me on my very first Bloomberg trip when I came to the US from the UK. We went to the Bahamas/Nassau and after a few client meetings, went to a local's bar meeting a few colourful characters.
Happy memories of a good man.
Thinking of all the Miller family xx

"Flattery will get you everywhere in life" he used to say to me when he was a mentor of mine at Bloomberg. I literally quoted him last week. His words live on in my memory. He will be missed.

He was such a great person. Though I was only in his presence a handful of times, his genuine warmth, great sense of humor, and megawatt smile always made me feel like a close friend. A big hug to Liz from afar. My heart goes out to the entire family at this difficult time.
