Thomas Muto
Thomas Michael Muto, known affectionately as Tom to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in his home in Midland at the age of 84 on Saturday, November 1, 2025. His final moments were spent surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, after a courageous battle with both Parkinson's disease and cancer. Born on May 24, 1941, in Oxford, Michigan, Tom was the cherished son of the late Fred and Virginia (Priest) Muto.
Tom's life was marked by his dedication to education and the joy he found in learning. After graduating from Goodrich High School, he continued his academic journey at MOTT Community College, eventually earning both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Central Michigan University. His passion for teaching led him to a fulfilling career as an elementary and special education teacher in Midland, where he made a lasting impact on the lives of countless children over his 30-year plus tenure. Beyond his professional achievements, Tom's heart belonged to his family. He married the love of his life, the former Susan Hand, and together they raised three children.
Tom was a proud member of the International Harvester Collectors Club, where he shared his love for antique flour sifters, tractors, and farming memorabilia. He enjoyed traveling to tractor shows, scrapping, and bowling. He would be your fourth for any game of euchre, and more-than-happily displayed his many last place euchre tournament trophies. Tom was an avid reader who delighted in telling dad jokes and spending time at his cabin on Lake Michigan. His grandchildren, in particular, were the recipients of his endless jokes and laughter.
One of Tom's greatest pleasures was making memories with his family. He relished the simple joys of life, such as having a beer and sharing his unique sayings, like "Play the violin and eat a lot of plankton," or a favorite quote like the one from W. C. Fields, "During one of my treks through Afghanistan, we lost our corkscrew. We were compelled to live on food and water for several days."
Tom is survived by his wife Susan, along with their children, Andrew (Helen) Muto, Terese (Alan) Bernardi, and Alanna Muto. Tom's legacy also lives on through his adored grandchildren, Jack, Blair, Samuel, and Paige. His brother, Don (Janice) Muto, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will also hold his memory dear. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Virginia (Priest) Muto and siblings, Jean, Fritz, and Chris.
Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 3-7 pm at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, located at 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. While there will be no services at this time, the visitation will provide a chance for those who knew and loved Tom to celebrate his life.
