Thomas Perry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scottsboro Funeral Home on Sep. 17, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Joseph "T.J." Perry, beloved basketball player, coach, and mentor, who left us peacefully on September 8, 2024, at the age of 39. Known for his perseverance on the court and compassion off of it, T.J. dedicated his life to teaching, guiding, and inspiring athletes, students, and communities across the state.
TJ Perry was a 2003 graduate of Section High School where he played on a state title team. He earned his bachelor's degree from Athens State University in 2024. With an impressive 12 year coaching career, TJ coached at multiple high schools and had recently begun assisting at Samford University, earning accolades and leaving a lasting impact on every community he influenced. His teams won numerous championships, but more importantly, he helped shape young men and women into strong, principled individuals. Many of his former players went on to have successful careers in sports, education, business, and beyond, crediting him for teaching them not only the game of basketball but the values of determination, teamwork, and integrity.
TJ's impact extended far beyond the gymnasium. Known for his tireless involvement in the community, he was a mentor and advocate for youth programs, often organizing basketball camps for children. He had a gift for recognizing potential in others and helping them realize their own strengths, both on and off the court. His larger-than-life presence, infectious enthusiasm, and hilarious sense of humor made him beloved to students, colleagues, and families.
Though known for his competitive spirit, TJ was a deeply compassionate man, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear. He had a huge heart and loved his friends and family beyond imagination. He was a firm believer in God, and he believed in second chances and was relentless in his support of those who needed guidance. He was not only a coach, but a loyal friend.
TJ's legacy is not only measured by the number of games won but by the lives he changed. He is survived by his loving mother, Nancy Prince; his father, Tommy Perry; his sister, Darcy Perry; his niece, Adasah; and his granny, Doris Prince. His family, friends, and countless players across many communities will miss his unwavering love and words of encouragement.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Darsie Prince and Joe (Betty) Perry.
The funeral service will be held at the Scottsboro Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2024 with Robi Coker officiating, and followed by burial services at Prince Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
TJ, you've left an incredible mark on the world. Rest in peace, knowing your influence will carry on for generations to come.

Sending heartfelt condolences to TJ's entire family. TJ has been a part of our family for a very long time. He and my son Trevor Lacey became very close over the years while he was playing at Butler High School and Alabama both for their love of Basketball. He actually drove Trevor to North Carolina for college at NC State University something I was truly grateful for. The loss of TJ has truly saddened us. We pray that GOD gives each of you PEACE, COMFORT and UNDERSTANDING today and the days ahead.
