Mr. Thomas Saunders, Jr., age seventy-five, departed this life and entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in Person County. He was born in Washington, DC September 7, 1948 to the late Thomas Saunders, Sr. and Frances Irene Gillespie Carter, was a member of Gethsemane Christian Church in Burlington, North Carolina, was an ordained minister and a United States Army Veteran.
He was a graduate of Eastern High School in Washington, DC and in 2007, retired as a detective from Giant Food after forty years of service.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Catherine and Helen; brothers, Willie and James (Butch); and step-father, Joseph Carter, Sr.
He leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife, Mary G. Saunders of the home; children: Aaron Leroy Ferguson, Thomas Saunders, III, Anthony Darcel Evans, Shaun Allan Saunders, Ebony Letia Saunders and Marcus Alexander Glover-Saunders, all of Maryland; a step-son, Brian Hughes of Maryland; sixteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; siblings: Zula Lee Jones of Greenville, North Carolina, Mary Carter-Cooper, also of Maryland, Annie Thompson (Roland), Joseph Carter, Jr. (Catherine) and Josephine Carter, all of Washington, DC; three brothers-in-law: Wayne Lipscomb of California, John Lipscomb (Dorotha) of North Carolina and Duward Grice (Rita) of Maryland; two sisters-in-law: Ruth Winstead and Lillian Grice, both of North Carolina: and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 1:00pm at Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home with Reverend James O. Patrick, Pastor at Gethsemane Christian Church, officiating and providing the eulogy. Burial will follow at the Gillespie Family Cemetery in Cheraw, South Carolina.
Visitation will also be Thursday at the funeral home from 12:00pm to 1:00pm when his body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
