Thomas Michael Scherz passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024 in Greenville, SC.
He was born March 10, 1955 in Frankfurt, Germany, and lived in numerous places as a child. Tom graduated from Windsor Forest High School, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Armstrong State College, and completed his Electrical Engineering degree at Georgia Tech before beginning work at Fluor where he retired in 2020. He enjoyed living and working in many different parts of the world including Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Asia, to name a few.
A true pirate at heart, Tom was affectionately known as the "Gray Ghost". He loved the water and open air – always looking for the next adventure whether it was sailing, scuba diving or motorcycling. He delighted in spending time with friends and family, and he will be greatly missed.
Tom is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Rosalinde Scherz; wife, Chimgee; daughter, Carly (Will); son, Patrick (Lauren); granddaughters, Blakely, Mayzie and Bella Reid; grandson, Castor; brother, Steve (Suzie); sisters, Michele and Leslie (Shane), and many close friends and colleagues.
He was predeceased by his sons, David and Tyler.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. The funeral will be held Friday, March 8, at 12:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown.
Family and friends who are unable to attend the service can view the livestream by clicking on the "WATCH LIVESTREAM" button located on the main obituary page.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity https://www.habitat.org/.
