Thomas Siemer Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Egan-Ryan Funeral Service - Central Chapel on Sep. 12, 2024.
Thomas Kyran Siemer, age 94, born at home April 11, 1930 in Glouster, Ohio and passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to well over a hundred people. Tom lived up to the sign that hung in his room, "The man, the myth, the legend!" He was so exciting and fun to have as a dad and grandpa.
Tom served in the Navy for two years, then St. Charles Seminary for two years before deciding his vocation was marriage and family when he met Dorothy Jessberger. They married and had six daughters and one son. He was a contract administrator for North American Rockwell, as well as starting his own general contracting company, Abbeyhills Inc. He specialized in government contracts, dealing mostly with post offices and VA hospitals.
Early on he valued family, when he had 6 small children and bought 200 acres in the Hocking Hills as well as dynamite and a bulldozer. He constructed a lake, roads, and gave his siblings and parents land so they could all build cabins together. There were many cousins, aunts and uncles who swam and had many great times together in "Siemerville." This precious time gave us all an appreciation for Gods creation in nature and strong family ties.
After his youngest daughter was born with a heart ailment he promised God that if she would be healed he would quit his job building weapons and work for peace. Which he has done since the late 1970's. Even Saint Pope John Paul II asked our Bishop Griffin, "How is Thomas Siemer doing?" His story was featured in the documentary, "God's of Metal" which was nominated for an academy award for best short documentary. Tom was the oldest living peace activist, still mailing his most recent book, " Christ's missing Peace", to people into his 90's.
Tom built two of his family homes. He had an artistic spirit and was a non-conformist for better or worse. He was better at asking for forgiveness than permission. He painted many portraits especially of his favorite subject, Our Lady of Guadeloupe. He used to marvel at the fact that it was the only painting done by the hand of God and the humility of Mary shown in the image.
After Dorothy passing in 1994 Tom remarried a wonderful widow Rita D'Escoto Clark and became like a father to her children and grandchildren for the next 25 years in Virginia and Nicaragua.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Naomi Siemer, siblings Paul (Norma), Ray (Joan), Jim (Sylvia), Phil, and daughter, Christina Allwein. He is survived by his sister, Maryann (John) Bricker; brothers Richard (Marjorie), Michael (Nancy), and countless cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by children Maria (Ron) Horn, Thomas F. (Robyn) Siemer, Marcia (Bob) Klingel, Lisa (Michael) Evans, Monica Siemer, Susanna (James) Longhi; son-in-law, Gary Allwein, as well as a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his wife, Rita D'Escoto Clark, step-children Michael (Dana) Clark, Margaret Clark, Sofia Clark, John (Antonella) Clark, Jill (Rich) Gollub, and Patrick (Pastora) Clark, and their children who knew him as "Grandpa."
Tom was so grateful to be able attend daily mass every day at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, even to the end when he was weak. Tom was an intelligent, fun, handsome, artistic, talented man who loved Jesus and his family.
Friends may call Thursday, September 19 from 4-8 p.m. at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 East Broad Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Catharine Church, 500 South Gould Road. Private burial at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
