SCHENECTADY - Thomas M. Smith, age 76, passed away on February 13, 2026, at Albany Medical Hospital, with his loving wife by his side.
Born on April 8, 1949, in Potsdam, N.Y., he was the oldest of three children, and the son of the late Donald and Catherine (Prashaw) Smith.
Tom was a graduate of Potsdam High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree at LeMoyne College. He studied for a short time at Syracuse University, and subsequently went to work at Clarkson University in the computer department. At the same time, he completed his MBA degree at Clarkson.
Tom met his wife on a blind date and proposed five months later, on Valentine's Day. They were married in September 1976, lived in Massena the first five years, and then moved to the Capital District, where he worked for New York State as a computer programmer, until 2014.
Tom enjoyed playing the drums in band and orchestra during his high school days, and later in college. He loved playing golf with his Dad when they had the opportunity, was very interested in WWII history, worked diligently on the Smith family tree, and was an avid college hockey fan.
Vacations consisted of camping in the Adirondacks with family and friends and trips to Cape Cod with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversaries.
Tom is the beloved husband of his wife, Sharon (Patterson) Smith; dear brother of Joel (Stephen Lewis) and Melinda (John Ciccotti); cherished uncle of Caitlin Smith (Gregg Gottermeier), Alexander (Anastasia Nikolis) Smith, Justin Gault (Brittany Walker) and Ryan Gault (Tiffany Benney); great-uncle of Killian, Anna and Lincoln; brother-in-law of Deborah Patterson.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, on Sunday, February 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. A funeral Mass and burial will take place in the summer in Colton, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any of Tom's favorite charities, LeMoyne College, Wounded Warrior Project, Habitat for Humanity or Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
