Thomas F. Strother, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, in his hometown of
Ashland, KY, at the age of 91. Tom was born December 14, 1933, in the same close-knit community, the first son and second of four children born to Miles and Ada Barney Strother.
Tom graduated from Ashland High School and went on to earn a degree in Finance from Ohio State University. His intelligence and work ethic led him to a successful career at Armco Steel Company, where he devoted 30 years before retiring. During his tenure, he held various positions, most notably in finance and quality control. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity, always willing to lend a helping hand or share his expertise.
He is survived by his loving sons, Michael Strother of Ashland, Matthew Strother (Donna) of Lexington, KY, Tommy Strother (Rita) of Gainesville, FL, and his daughters Lisa Ainslie (James) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Linda Smid of Jacksonville, FL. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Taylnn Strother, Abraham Strother, Toby Chansuthus, Theo Chansuthus, J.D. Ainslie, Samuel Smid, Abigail Smid, Rebekah Iffland, and Hannah Strother, as well as several great-grandchildren who will miss his guidance and gentle spirit.
The mothers of his children, Marjorie Strother, Janice Justice, and his former wife, Patsy Anderson, along with a host of extended family and good friends, also survive him. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Ada Barney Strother, his grandson Rowan Strother, his brothers Miles Strother and James Strother, sister Kathleen Atkinson, and son-in-law Joe Smid.
Beyond his professional and family accomplishments, Tom was a man of many interests. He had a passion for photography and once owned a printing shop that showcased his creative talents. An avid fisherman, he could often be found by the water, enjoying the tranquility of nature. His garden was a source of pride and joy, and his travels allowed him to explore and appreciate the world's beauty. Tom's dexterity extended to carpentry, something he enjoyed doing as often as he could.
Tom's love for music was a thread that ran through his life. He played the guitar, fiddle, and harmonica, often serenading family and friends with melodies that touched their hearts. His zest for life was also evident in his love for riding his motor scooter, and his companionship with animals, especially his beloved cats. A man who stayed informed, Tom enjoyed watching Fox News and engaging in lively discussions.
Tom attended Unity Baptist Church and maintained a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His faith was a source of strength and comfort throughout his life.
Described by those who loved him as handy, creative, and intelligent, Tom Strother was a man who not only fixed things but also built enduring relationships. His absence will be deeply felt by all, but his memory will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have been part of his life's journey. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
Services will be held privately. He will be laid to rest with his parents in the Ashland Cemetery.
