Thomas Gilbert Thorpe, affectionately known as Tiki Tom, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, in Akron, Ohio, just days shy of his 61st birthday. Born on January 22, 1964, in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, Tom lived a life rich with love, laughter, and adventure.
Tom was the kind of person who made friends wherever he went. His larger-than-life personality drew people in, from patrons at Grills Seafood Deck & Tiki Bar, where he was fondly nicknamed Tiki Tom, to fellow sports fans who shared his avid enthusiasm for various sports. He had an infectious spirit that brightened any room and an ability to connect deeply with others, leaving lasting impressions on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Tom's interests extended beyond his charismatic charm; he was passionate about the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, he spent countless hours boating and fishing for sportfish and redfish, relishing those peaceful moments on the water. Many cherished memories were created during these excursions, often shared with family and friends who appreciated Tom’s infectious laughter and joy for life.
Raised on the space coast, Tom took pride in his upbringing, which instilled in him a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world. He often delighted in sharing stories of his adventures and experiences, captivating listeners with tales of both the serene and the exhilarating.
Tom's legacy extends into the hearts of his beloved family. He leaves behind a devoted brother, Joe (Grace), and a loving ex-wife, Candi, who will forever cherish the moments they shared. He is the proud father of Jordan (Nicole), Sarah (Joe), and Angela Marie, who have inherited his passion for life and strong connection to family. In addition to his children, Tom's spirit will continue to live on in the laughter and joy of his many grandchildren and nephews, who brought him immeasurable happiness.
Tom is survived by a family that adored him, yet he will be profoundly missed by his late parents, Karen Spicer and Thomas Thorpe Sr., who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms. As we remember Tiki Tom, we celebrate a life filled with love, adventure, and an unwavering zest for life. The footprints he left behind are indelible, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who loved him, reminding us all to cherish every moment.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Pebble Creek! Tom really loved all of you there.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC) operated by the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation. This center provides grants, information, and advocacy to improve the quality of life for people with paralysis.
A celebration of life will be held water side in his native Florida.
