Thomas “Tom” Matthews Cantrell, 72, passed away on December 23, 2025. Tom was born in Nashville, TN and was a lifelong Nashvillian. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1975 and Nashville State Technical Institute in 1978. He worked in the mail services department at Regions Bank’s downtown location for 38 years and retired in 2018 without ever missing a day of work.

Tom enjoyed going to the Green Hills Library and listening to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. He was an avid listener, viewer and supporter of WPLN/NPR and WNPT.

Tom faced many challenges in his life and met them all with courage and grace. He will be greatly missed.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm “Mac” McCarty Cantrell and Mildred Porter Bethshares Cantrell. He is survived by his sister, Leigh Cantrell Wiener (Tom), niece, Elizabeth Leigh Short (Cory) and great nephew, Porter Ernest Short.

The family would like to thank everyone at Clarendale at Bellevue Place Memory Care who cared for Tom with kindness and compassion.
