Thomas Paul Ubl was born on September 13, 1942 in New Ulm to
Alphonse and Rosella (Hauser) Ubl. He attended school in Hanska, St.
Mary's Grade School in New Ulm and was a 1960 graduate of New Ulm
High School. Tom was united in marriage to the love of his life, Darlene
Engelby on April 27, 1963 in North Mankato. During their nearly 55
years of marriage, Tom and Darlene were blessed with 3 children.
During his working years, Tom was employed at Burdick Grain
Elevator, Skyline Mobile Homes, Allied Builders and then was self-
employed as a carpenter until retiring in 2007. Tom often joked about
going back into business after he created an alcoholic beverage that he
was extremely proud of. He invented this drink at his grandson's
wedding in 2018 after mixing Grain Belt "Nordeast" and "Premium
Light" that were on tap at the event, he called his creation "Northern
Light" and would order this when out at local restaurants and even
pitched the idea to Schell's Brewery.
Tom enjoyed many hobbies including wood carving, stained glass,
reading, archery, fishing, camping, hunting, word search puzzles,
taekwondo where he earned his black belt and he was very involved in
his church. He always tried his best to attend events for his children,
grandchildren, Darlene's Daycare children and great grandchildren. Tom
had such a joy for life and a contagious smile.
Tom truly cherished spending time with his family, children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by his
family and all who came in contact with him, blessed be his memory.
