Thomas Unis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Gloucester on Aug. 7, 2023.
Thomas "Tonto" M. Unis died peacefully on August 4, 2023 surrounded by those who love him the most, his siblings.
Tom was a "war baby" as he would say, born July 6th, 1943, the second of eight children of his late parents Earl J. Unis, and Sally H. Unis. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester.
Tom graduated from St. Ann's High School, where he was a great baseball and basketball player. Tom served in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1967 and was stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. After his service, Tom spent 30 years working at O'Donnell Usen under his Uncle David Simon. When he retired, Tom joined his brothers in the family business, Unis Plumbing, working alongside them in the shop.
Those who know Tom found it easy to love him. He had an ear-to-ear smile that would brighten up any room, and a voice that distinguished him in a crowd. A gregarious man, gentle and kind, he was a crooner, who sang "Mack the Knife" at many a family wedding and brought the house down.
Tom loved a Lebanese meal and a Saturday at the track. He was an avid Boston sports fan, but loved the LA Dodgers. Any given Sunday, you could likely find Tom pulled up close to a TV, shoulder to shoulder with his brothers, cheering on the Pats, or playing armchair quarterback. He also loved a family whist game around a loud table, filled with laughter. One of eight children, family was the center of his world. Tom was a longtime caregiver for his mother, Sally, and loved a room filled with his brothers and sister, aunts, uncles, and many nieces and nephews. He was a teddy bear of a man, and to know him was to love him. He will be forever in so many hearts.
Tom is survived by his brother David of Beverly, his sister Elizabeth Philips and her husband John, brother Edward, brother Earl Jr. and his wife Donna, brother Joseph and his wife Nancy, and brother James and his wife Carol, all of Gloucester. He survived as well by his sister-in-law Marion of Florida, and seventeen nieces and nephews, their spouses and their children who all adored him.
Tom is predeceased by his parents, brother John, niece Adrienne, both of Las Vegas, as well as his sister-in-law, Candace, of Gloucester.
His funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish (St. Ann's Church), 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester on Thursday August 10th at 11am Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester on Wednesday, August 9th, from 4-7pm.
