THOMAS UNTERBERG Obituary

UNTERBERG--Thomas Israel. It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas I. Unterberg announces his passing on January 10, 2023. Tommy succumbed peacefully to old age at his home in Rumson, New Jersey, surrounded by family. He was 92. Few people are blessed in all the ways that Tommy was or achieved in all the ways Tommy did. Graced with an analytical mind and a passion for new ideas, Tommy innovated in business as the head of investment firms that he ran with gusto, and that bore his family name; C.E. Unterberg, Towbin; L.F. Rothschild, Unterberg, Towbin; and Unterberg Harris. A believer in "tech" before the term was even invented, Tommy took public such notable companies as Intel, Compaq, Applied Materials, Cray Research, and over 200 others over the course of his 65 years on Wall Street. Steeped in the belief that good fortune carries with it responsibility for others, Tommy quietly supported and served on the boards of numerous institutions in New York and New Jersey, including Grand Street Settlement, Montefiore Medical Center, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Monmouth University, and Monmouth Medical Center. Central to Tommy's life was his family. His work, his philanthropy, and his recreation all involved members of his immediate family, starting with his father Clarence E. Unterberg, from whom he learned the ways of Wall Street, his mother Marjorie Kahn Unterberg, who led the family in its charitable support for nursing and health care services, and his uncle David, who introduced him to Grand Street Settlement, on whose board Tommy served for over 50 years. Tommy's sister Mary, and his daughters Ellen and Emily, and their families, were regular guests at Tommy and Ann's Rumson home and the source of much joy. Tommy was a runner (he completed over 10 marathons) and especially enjoyed running with his beloved nephew, Andy. Travel took Tommy and Ann from the foothills of Mount Everest to the shores of Turks and Caicos and many places in between; whenever possible, family was brought along for the adventure. In later years, he was happy to host everyone at his home to play with his beloved pack of dogs and to watch football (any team, but especially the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills) or listen to music (anything, but most recently the Indigo Girls and Linda Ronstadt), all while catching up on the latest news from his grandchildren and developments in the world. Tommy was a soft-spoken man of few words. His observations about all things were incisive -- and his compliments were only given when truly earned. With his grandchildren, who called him Pop Pop, he shared his wisdom generously, and his advice only when it was asked for. As he had with his own children, he urged them to make good decisions, but he wanted them to make those decisions for themselves. Thomas I. Unterberg was a graduate of Deerfield Academy (1948), Princeton University (1952) and the Wharton School of Business (1956), and he served in the United States Army (1952-4). He is survived and will be greatly missed, by his wife Ann Berninger Unterberg; his daughters Ellen (Andrew) Celli and Emily (James) Satloff; his grandchildren Rebecca, Dustin, Hannah, Theo, and Andrew; his sister Mary Arno DeBare; his nephews; Ben (Nancy) Arno, Andy (Janis) Arno, and niece Elizabeth (Stan) Arno; his dear friend and former wife Susan Appleman Unterberg; and his many friends and colleagues. The family wishes to thank all those who were there to help Tommy in his final years. Edith and Nick treated him with love and respect over the course of a generation, and long-time professional trainers Dr. Joe and Nancy prolonged his life immeasurably. Unimaginable would have been his life without trusted associate Marjorie. And all the assistance offered by Robin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be directed to Monmouth Medical Center Foundation in support of the Unterberg Children's hospital or Grand Street Settlement. A celebration of his life will be planned for this spring.

I am so saddened by Tommy´s passing. I remember the first IPO we did together I believe in 1968 with he as lead Underwriter and I as Company legal counsel. We served on Boards together and did 100s of financings of technology enterprises. We often shared thoughts as we built our respective firms. I loved and admired his quiet and thoughtful demeanor, his dry humor and his wonderful integrity. I will miss him. He was a special one of a kind.

Tommy was always thoughtful and insightful and I enjoyed the brief time I got to work for him. As a young analyst he really gave so many opportunities to see how things really happened. He loved the technology sector and shined in putting deals together and financing companies. Finally Tommy even reached out when not working directly together. I hope the world sees more men like him in the future.
