Thomas Elmore Whitehead

Thomas (Tommy) Elmore Whitehead, 94, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026 in Emporia, Virginia, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on January 14, 1932, in Greensville County, VA, Tommy lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to family, service to his country, and a steadfast work ethic.

Tommy was the son of Katie Newsome Whitehead and Otha Whitehead. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Cecelia Harris Whitehead; and his sister Joyce Garner. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Barbara Clarke of Emporia, VA.

Family was at the heart of Tommy’s life. He was a devoted father to Mark Whitehead (Kay) of Ebony, VA; Kurt Whitehead (Melvin Mann) of Richmond, VA; Paul Whitehead of Gasburg, VA; and Karl Whitehead (Amy) of Powhatan, VA. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Casin Whitehead (Emily), Candace Joyner (James), Caleb Whitehead, Elle Whitehead, and Mari Whitehead; and great-grandchildren: Riley, Weston, and Briggs Joyner; and Page and Calvin Whitehead.

A proud member of the National Guard, Tommy served his country with honor. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career with the phone company where he worked diligently for over 30 years before retiring from GTE (Verizon). Tommy and Cecilia moved to Lawrenceville, VA in 1956 where they raised their 4 sons. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 52 in Lawrenceville.

Tommy found great joy in spending time with his family at Lake Gaston. These cherished moments by the water created lasting memories for generations. He also enjoyed traveling with Cecelia, Barbara and her late husband Bobby Clarke. These journeys were filled with laughter and companionship that enriched his later years.

Tommy lost his father as a young boy. He, his mother, and his sisters moved to his maternal uncle’s dairy, Belfield Dairy, in Emporia where he started working at 8 yrs old to help support the family. This started a lifetime devoted to family, work, responsibilities, volunteerism, and assisting others. It is notable that decades later the Bloom Retirement Center was built on the former site of the Belfield Dairy where Tommy had spent much of his childhood and consequently completed his circle of life.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tommy will be deeply missed by all. His warmth and presence leave an enduring imprint on the hearts of those he held dear. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life well lived.

Interment will be at 1 PM, Sat, Jan 31, 2026 at Forest Hill Baptist Church 2103 Pine Log Rd. Skippers, VA (weather permitting). A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
